Guatemala a city in the 90´s
A friend of mine told me that Guatemala reminds her of an early 90’s USA city like New York or Chicago and I kind of see why, even though you can make the claim that a city like Guatemala City must certainly have an agenda, a plan to follow into the future, the truth is that as many other cities, Guatemala city is usually drowning, trying to keep itself on float. An example of this is the difference between the rich and poor part of the city, although the difference is already implied on the adjectives, I would like to point out to a special aspect of Guatemala city, its size… So when you ask, why Guatemala feels like a USA city from the early 90’s, I may answer... Is because the city has not reach the point on which a part can change (on use of water, economic activity, number of people, etc) without affecting the rest of it, this combined with the high criminal rates and the lack of technology does remind us of a New York back in 1990, just right after New York almost went bankrupt. Understand how Guatemala City looks compared with other cities (whether is a contemporary city or a memory of a long gone city of the 90’s) will help us take advantage of the good things we have while throwing some light on “how to coupe with the bad ones”.
However we should not forget that we are in a very particular situation, Guatemala is a city that is no so big it can’t be changed and we (unlike NY or Chicago in the ‘90s) have access to information way faster and cheaper, information we can use to learn from the past and help shape a city that looks to the future, with project and regulation that allow us and futures generation to call it home.
