I finally finished my first Terry Prachet book today, “Guards! Guards!” My initial thoughts before I get too bogged down by negativity are as follows:
There should have been more dragons as weapons. The copy that I have has Vimes holding a dragon on the front cover, so I was really hoping that it would come back in the climax, and it didn’t. So I’m sad about that.
I really liked some of the characters (the Librarian, Wonse, and Death were some of my favorites), but Vimes was so mid.
Most of the dialogue was good, but some of the transitions between ideas were so clunky, or the tags just didn’t make sense. Why does the Watch shrug so much???
I’m not saying it would solve the plot, but I do think that Vimes and Wonse should have kissed. Does it make a lot of narrative sense? No. Were their early interactions vibey? Yes.
I want to make clear, I did really like this book. I’d give it a solid 4.3 stars. It was really refreshing to read something that let me focus more on the plot than the characters for once, since I typically read books with smaller casts. So this was a really fun read, and very much needed for the end of the school year.
