First of All.. What is Grunge ?
GrungeĀ (sometimes referred to as theĀ Seattle sound) is anĀ alternative rockĀ genre andĀ subcultureĀ that emerged during theĀ mid-1980sĀ in the AmericanĀ Pacific NorthwestĀ state ofĀ Washington, particularly inĀ SeattleĀ and nearby towns. Grunge fuses elements ofĀ punk rockĀ andĀ heavy metal, but without punk's structure and speed. The genre featured theĀ distortedĀ electric guitarĀ sound used in both genres, although some bands performed with more emphasis on one or the other. Like these genres, grunge typically usesĀ electric guitar,Ā bass guitar,Ā drumsĀ and vocals. Grunge also incorporates influences fromĀ indie rockĀ bands such asĀ Sonic Youth. Lyrics are typically angst-filled and introspective, often addressing themes such asĀ social alienation,Ā self-doubt,Ā abuse,Ā neglect,Ā betrayal,Ā socialĀ andĀ emotional isolation,Ā psychological traumaĀ and a desire forĀ freedom.

The early grunge movement revolved around Seattle's independent record labelĀ Sub PopĀ and the region'sĀ underground musicĀ scene. The owners of Sub Pop marketed the style shrewdly, encouraging the media to describe it as "grunge"; the style became known as a hybrid ofĀ punkĀ andĀ metal.
By the early 1990s, its popularity had spread, with grunge bands appearing in California, then emerging in other parts of the United States and in Australia, building strong followings and signing major record deals. Grunge was commercially successful in the early-to-mid-1990s due to releases such asĀ Nirvana'sĀ Nevermind,Ā Pearl Jam'sĀ Ten,Ā Soundgarden'sĀ Superunknown,Ā Alice in Chains'Ā Dirt, andĀ Stone Temple Pilots'Ā Core. The success of these bands boosted the popularity of alternative rock and made grunge the most popular form ofĀ rock musicĀ at the time.
Several factors contributed to grunge's decline in prominence. During theĀ mid-to-late 1990s, many grunge bands broke up or became less visible. Nirvana'sĀ Kurt Cobain, labeled byĀ TimeĀ as "theĀ John LennonĀ of the swinging Northwest", struggled with an addiction to heroin beforeĀ his deathĀ at theĀ age of 27Ā in 1994. Although most grunge bands had disbanded or faded from view by the late 1990s, they influencedĀ modern rockĀ music, as their lyrics brought socially conscious issues intoĀ pop cultureĀ and added introspection and an exploration of what it means toĀ be true to oneself. Grunge was also an influence on later genres such asĀ post-grungeĀ (such asĀ CreedĀ andĀ Nickelback).
