What I love about asking people for suggestions is that I never know what episode someone will choose. Personally, I would never have chosen this episode but I like the challenge. Thanks!
So, this episode isnāt a favorite which means this review wonāt be my best one!
Okay then, this episode was supposed to introduce a new super hero - an actual X-Men style superhero - and a potential love interest for Angel. Since this episode introduced a character who lasted about three episodes and only worked as a love interest in one, maybe two, episodes, one could view Ground State as a bit of a failure, an aborted mission.Ā
Iāll admit to being one of the few people who never really liked Gwen Raiden. The most I like her is in Players. I think she was written as an absolute clichĆ© and also as a typical male fantasy. From her outfit - both revealing, leathery and red or black, to the way she walked swaying her hips, to the fact that she couldnāt touch anyone which made everything sexual - see Gwen kissing Angel and having sex with Gunnā¦.Needless to say, none of this impresses me. Even her wit and badassary seem designed to make her appealing to the male audience, as well as the female audience.Ā
Unsurprisingly, the Gwen side of the episode interests me the least. Her story reminds me too much of Rogue from X-Men, watching her threaten her client or expertly stealing something doesnāt make me weak in the knees. I also detest her kissing Angel. I know this argument might seem silly or even sexist, but Gwen looks like sheās barely 18 years old and at this point David Boreanaz looks about 30 something, so this pairing always looked wrong to me. Also, I hate these random kisses that are the equivalent of needless sex scenes in a HBO show. Gwen and Angel kiss, for some reason, and then Angel is likeĀ āCordelia!ā. `*massive eyeroll*ā¦Ā
On a different note, I liked the playfulness of Angel and Gunn acting like boys and claiming to know how to get into a protected building. Fred has to come to their rescue here. I do dislike her crying though. I think it was a bit over the top.Ā Lilah is in this episode and sheās great, as usual. Oh, and I love Weslah!Ā
Sooo, 7/10. I do dislike Gwenā¦Ā
Send me a BtVS/AtS episode and Iāll give you my brutally honest opinion
