You woke up to a disturbance you were too groggy to put your finger on. It felt late and the room felt cold, a chilling draft seeping the heat from your slumber. You rolled over and blindly reached out only to feel empty sheets on the other side of the bed.
Sitting up, you blearily squinted around the room. It was still dark outside, moonlight streaming in from the window you were sure you had left open. The air was cold, prickling over your skin as you left the warmth of your bed behind.
“Liu’er?” you yawned, shuffling your way towards the bedroom door.
Before you could reach it, the shadows of the hallway danced and morphed into a familiar silhouette. Dark air stepped into a solid shape, the ominous purple glow shifting to golden eyes, soft and fond.
“Hey, sugarplum,” Macaque cooed in concern. “What’re you doing up?”
Firm muscles and soft fur soothed your drowsy distress when you leaned against him. “Looking for you.”
A quiet chuckle caressed your ear and comforting arms wrapped around you, warding off your slight shivers. “Just wanted to close the window and get some extra blankets. Wasn’t expecting it to get so cold tonight. Come on, let’s get you warmed up.”
The monkey led you back to bed, adding a heavy cover over the top before ushering you under the blankets. He slid in next to you and hugged you close, arms and tail wrapping around you in a hold both comforting and warm.
“Better?” he asked, nuzzling your temple.
“Yeah,” you murmured back, already falling back asleep. “Goodnight, Liu’er.”
A gentle kiss was pressed to your forehead before he tucked you under his chin. “Goodnight, sugarplum.”
