Marlon Brando poses with Greer Garson and Deborah Kerr, two of his costars in Julius Caesar (1953) an American film adaptation of William Shakespeare's play, directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz. Brando played Mark Antony, Greer Garson was Calpurnia, and Kerr played Portia. Julius Caesar was played by Louis Calhern. The casting of Brando was met with some skepticism when it was announced, as he had acquired the nickname of "The Mumbler" following A Streetcar Named Desire (1951). However, Brando's performance was praised and the New York Times' critic, Bosley Crowther, stated in his review that “Happily, Mr. Brando's diction, which has been guttural and slurred in previous films, is clear and precise in this instance. In him a major talent has emerged."
