our place
To increase biodiversity in urban communities, i think that there should be a social rule that the only places that can have cut lawns are places specifically for children or pets to play.
A few common examples are playgrounds and dog parks.
This way they can run around and have a good time without trampling the wildflowers or worrying about ticks.
There also would be a minimum size limit to these spaces because kids and animals cannot play in a space that is super small.
So backyards that are tiny would be expected to have wildflowers and tall grass instead.
Or full on gardens with flowers and/or veggies.
"But what if I'm not good at gardening?!"
You don't have to be.
Most lawn care stores sell big bags of seeds that are native to your local ecosystem.
All you have to do is sprinkle em all over the yard, wait for some rain, and in no time you will have a mini meadow! Perfect for bees and other pollinators!
Lawns as big monocultures for walking around were never meant to be the norm in urban centers or anywhere.
They were created by European nobility and other rich people as a way to say "Hey look at me! I have all this land but don't have to grow anything useful on it!"
Don't be like the European nobility.
Make green spaces useful again.
Happy Wednesday, everyone! 🌿✨
Taking a quiet moment to enjoy the shade of these beautiful trees and the peaceful atmosphere of the park. Finding calm in nature is the best way to pause during the week.
I hope you all have a peaceful and wonderful Wednesday! 💚

Gardening publicly update: WHAT!?!?!
It's been quite the 48 hours here. The following changes to the growing green stuff in town have happenend:
City Council approves zoning changes removing all obstacles to vegetable gardening in front yards.
State dept of transport has started program to allow local group to maintain patchwork gardens in some greenspaces at highway interchanges. They are also starting a study to plant Boston Ivy along the sound deadening walls. (It's being run by a PhD student from a reasonably close uni).
Next town over is converting a small plot (about 1.5 football fields) to a community garden to grow veggies next year. Their High School is converting a small yard tractor to run on spent cooking oils (that their uni track chemistry class is refining.)
And in the least of all stories: I finally have my garden beds full of leaves and covered up for winter.
While none of these things are earth shattering, they're all steps.
