Gaddafi's 50 greatest achievements imho
Birth - 1969 (27 years) PLANNING THE REVOLUTION
He memorized the Quran before he knew how to read
Led many political demonstrations and protest during high school, most notably against the assasination of Patrice Lumumba.
Laid the groundwork for his future revolution, starting at just 14 (1956) by organizing and recruiting his classmates and working up a plan. Nicknamed "4000 Days of Secret Work".
1969-1977 THE REVOLUTION AND ITS AFTERMATH
Successfully carried out his Revolution by taking over a radio station and announcing that the country had been liberated. Sept 1 1969
Nationalized the banks Nov 1969
School enrollment for boys doubled between 1969-1973, tripled for girls. Made education free all the way through University, government will even pay for them to study abroad.
Eradicated illiteracy within 10 years. Kids were allowed to take one year off school to teach their elders in the rural villages how to read. (1969-1980)
Women's rights: Passed equal pay for equal work law in 1970, 2 years before the United States would pass a similar law. Women granted the right to divorce, to choose her own husband, and husband must get wife's consent before taking additional wives; Min age for marriage raised to 16.*(Some sources say 20) Women allowed to participate in government & military,
Healthcare was made free for all Libyans, government will pay for treatment abroad when needed. Increased healthcare budget from 18 million to 135 million. Doctors more than doubled by 1973, built 10 new hospitals + 85 clinics Tuberculosis cut from 101 cases per 10,000 people to 6 per 10,000. Infant mortality from 120 per 1000 births to 80 in 1000 births by 1973
Expelled the British Military bases 3/31/70 Expelled the American Military base 6/11/70 Expelled the Italian settlers and turned over their plantations to Libyan farmers, 10/7/70
NATIONALIZED THE OIL !!! 7/7/70 (Also heavily involved in OPEC negotiations to raise price of oil)
Persuades over 20 African nations to sever ties with Israel, starting with Uganda. 1970-1973
Helps liberate Former Portugese colonies in Africa: Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique & Angola, was also instrumental in the liberation or continued independence of Zimbabwe, Namibia, South Africa, Chad, Uganda. Mediate peace deal for Yemen. He also lends aid to the Polisario, (Morocco) Basque (Spain) Moro (Phillipines) IRA (Ireland) and various Palestinian liberation groups, 1969-1990
Zwara Declaration to eliminate bureacracy & corruption and start the process of transitioning from Revolutionary rule over to direct democracy 4/15/73 *Introduces Third Universal Theory Oct - Nov 1973 *Declares Sharia/Quran the official law of Libya 1974
Farming/Agricultural Development plan est, 1972-1975+ Anyone who is willing/able to work it was given a free farm by the government. Goal to produce 35% of food domestically by the 80s.

People's Power Declaration 3-2-77 The Revolutionary Command Council gave over power directly to citizens, Libya will be run by Peoples Congresses and Committees.
Completed second phase of plan to house every Libyan. Before Gaddafi's revolution, There had been 65,000 homeless Libyans, and a total of 40% of the population lived in substandard housing - tents, huts, shacks. Gaddafi implemented plan in 1969 to house every Libyan by 1982. Built 419, 043 new homes by 1978. Abolished landlords (except widows could still rent out to a tenant) by turning over all rental homes to the tenant that occupied it-making it rent to own. Housing payments are interest free/income based. 1977-1985 (?)
Private businesses seized and transformed into co-ops owned by the employees, as prescribed in Pt. 2 of the Green Book. 9/1/78
Donates helicopters to Malta airsea rescue. Coincidentally next month was a horrible hurricane but many lives were saved due to the modern rescue equipment from Libya. Sept 1978

Stood his ground against numerous provocations from Ronald Reagan. Offered political asylum to Americans wanting to flee Reagan's regime, 1/1/86. Declared the Gulf of Sirte Libyan territory. Reagan sent fleets to patrol and trespass in Libya's territorial waters hoping to provoke Libya to strike which would give America an excuse to attack in "self defense" when Libya did not fall for this, Reagan manufactured an excuse to bomb Gaddafi's personal residence. Gaddafi miraculously survived & the whole thing backfired into a PR win for him. Erected a statue of a golden fist clutching a U.S. fighter jet that Libya managed to shoot down in self-defense during the attack -1986

Italy agreed to pay $5 billion in reparations to Libya 8/30/08 as a result of Gaddafi's negotiations
Proposal to African Union (after being appointed chairman of A.U.) for a single African currency (Gold dinar) backed by gold - kind of sad because it was a major reason America & France decided to get rid of him but I can see how he thought it was a good idea. (He also reiterated Africa should have its own military & single passport like the E.U., ideas he's promoted since at least 2000) 2/4/2009
Attended the Lake Chad Commission Summit "Save Lake Chad" forum. Made proposal to attach rivers Bangui and Chari to Lake Chad and also offered to link Libya's own Manmade River into it (idea he first told to Edmond Jouve in 2000) He offered to fund this project for $14.5 billion if it proved environmentally feasible 10/31/2010
Put $65 billion into a sovereign wealth fund for Africa 2010
Libya had almost no foreign debt in 2010 and no IMF loans.
2010 United Nations Human Development Index ranked Libya the highest in Africa & 53rd out of 169 countries in the world, placing it in the "HIGH" category of human development and above many other "first world countries" in Europe/Asia/Latin America
Gaddafi stood his ground against the world's greatest superpower + it's NATO lackeys (U.S.A. & 17 others) for 8 months under aerial bombardment & proxy war on the ground with Libyans hostile to him & mercenaries from surrounding areas (Jordan, Qatar, Syria, Turkey, etc.) despite his airforce being grounded and no allies, he refused to flee or surrender but stayed & fought for his country as he vowed until he was assasinated in Oct. 2011
