The potato of my Irish ancestors: The Lumper. This variety, and others closely related to it, were widely grown across Ireland leading up to the great famine of 1845 and 1846 because this then-novel Andean crop grew well in poor soil and could feed a family almost singlehandedly. The reason for a reliance on one lumpy potato crop and subsequently the reason for the famine: impoverishment due to British colonial rule. So when late blight (Phytophtora infestans) destroyed the potatoes, poor people suffered first and hardest, as tends to happen with natural disasters. A million died, a million fled Ireland. When I plant and harvest this potato, I feel connected to my Irish potato farming ancestors, and I’m glad that both this variety and my ancestors survived, grew stronger, and kept fighting so future generations could live a good life. Stone bread! Developed in different locations, the stories show how the sin of ignoring the needy is punished by #God. Their content shows the time-frame. Christian morals were well accepted in Central Europe by then. During the #Greatfamine, a poor woman asked for some bread from her rich sister. But the stone-hearted sister denied saying, "I don't have bread. Even if I had, I would have rather wanted those to turn into stones!” All breads in her store immediately turned into stone. One person at Leiden in Netherlands brought one of those to St. Peter's Church to prove the historical fact showing that to others. During 1597 famine, a Becker in Dortmund had bought a lot of wheatgrains. He was happy that the breads will be enough to fill his store. But one day in the middle of preparation, all his breads became stones. He grabbed a loaf to cut it. As soon as he cut the bread with his knife, blood flowed from it. He hanged himself in his room right away. In the prime church of Landshut consecrated to Saint Castulus, a round stone in the shape of a bread with four small holes in surface hangs in a silver case. Legend says that the Saint had appeared there just before the fest of death. Dressed as a poor man, he visited a widow in the city to ask for alms. The woman told her daughter to give him the sole bread left in her home, kept for the needy. The reluctant daughter had to give it but she tried to save a piece from it before. The bread was actually meant for the Saint. Hence it turned into a piece of stone the moment one piece was removed. The sin of the girl showed up. They say that the fingerprints of the starving one are still seen clearly in that stone. During Great famine, a poor woman with two children in Danzig was wandering when they met a monk from the monastery of Oliva. She begged for a loaf of bread from him. The monk replied, “I don’t have any.” The woman said, “But I see you are holding one.” He replied, “Oh! This is a stone to throw at the dogs.” After some time when he took out the bread to eat, he found that it had turned into a stone. The incident shocked him. The Land league adopted the slogan "the land for the people", which was vague enough to be acceptable to Irish nationalists across the political spectrum. For most of the tenant farmers, the slogan meant owning their own land. For smallholders on uneconomic holdings, especially in the congested western areas, it meant being granted larger holdings that their families had held previous to the Great Famine evictions.

Galway and environs: 1) I love the structure of these trees; 2) dinner on night 1, at Sheridan's Cheesemongers - delicious! 3) and 4) on the Galway waterfront; 5) fishing; 6) the plaque says it all - very moving; 7) the aforementioned lighthouse is a point in the distance, on the walk to Salthill; 8) the beachwalk was closed because of a storm that destroyed most of it - thank goodness the Irish just ignore these signs and walk wherever they durn well please; 9) got past the crowds to spend contemplation time on this (mostly) deserted beach)
