Feeding squirrels in wildlife rehab is no easy feat! There is a science to wildlife rehab — from weighing each squirrel daily to calculate the amount of formula needed, to doing physical exams to make sure they are developing well — it's a tall order but Casey and Kristin make it look easy! All of the babies pictured here are Eastern Gray Squirrels, the most common squirrel in Virginia. We have a total of five squirrel species: this one, Fox Squirrels, Red Squirrels, Southern Flying Squirrels, and the endangered Northern Flying Squirrel!

We need new nets!!! 😂😅 One of the wonderful (and terrible) things that happens about wildlife rehab is you can NEVER expect what happens next. One minute everything is going smoothly... another minute one of your squirrel patients escapes during cage transfer... and then you catch him, but the net has a hole and the squirrel gets out and crawls under a cage that requires four people to move...and when you finally move the cage, suddenly the sliding door to the office falls off the hinge and the squirrel runs into the office and hides behind the computer! 🥲😫 After forty minutes of effort and creative thinking, the squirrel is finally captured... but then nearly escapes AGAIN after it did something no other squirrel patient has EVER done before... nearly CHEW his way out of an aquarium lid!!! Thankfully this squirrel was due to go outside in a pre-release cage (see final photo), something the staff is VERY thankful for.
