Platner’s scandals. The President of the United States and his entire party are exposed pedophiles, rapists, corrupt corporate puppets when they aren’t puppetmasters, bought and paid for by foreign interests, abusers, war profiteers, screaming idiots, and cheerfully co-operating with big tech to destroy the planet on a quest to fully replace every human being they possibly can with a chatbot, and they aren’t shy about showing how gleeful the idea makes them to any camera they can find.

Too many Democrats looked away from who Graham Platner was and what Graham Platner had done — because he was saying the right things on the economy, and because people thought he was going to win. That’s just true. It’s exactly the same reason too many Republicans look away from Trump, or Max Miller, or Ken Paxton, an absolute scumbag who’s their Senate candidate in Texas. They look away because they think these men can win. Let’s stop pretending otherwise. Winning became the ethic, and everything else became negotiable.

Platner today may be nothing like the man he once was. Maybe he adheres now to a code of candor, honor, and prudence. And it may well be the case that the people of Maine are willing to set aside Platner’s past, even his very recent past, because they like his policies, which really do prioritize the needs of ordinary Americans. But Graham Platner arguably owes prospective voters a more fleshed out story about the ways in which he has changed, and a guarantee that those changes are real—and permanent, this time.

Republicans, meanwhile, are trying to build what will—don’t fool yourself—become, if built, huge death camps, in as many suburbs as possible, while maintaining a lethal and ruinous war in Iran, plus continued support for the genocidal Netanyahu regime, plus they’re trying to starve out the Cubans so we can finally win the Bay of Pigs invasion. Kamala would have done at most one of those things. The vote-blue-no-matter-who argument continues to be as cogent as ever; the don’t-vote-it-only-encourages-them argument continues to be a piece of wishful thinking, a way out of a choice between bad options that consists of closing your eyes and pretending real hard and insisting that this action manifests agency or principles rather than denial. It didn’t when people on the broad left refrained from voting for Kamala because of Gaza, and it won’t if Mainers on the broad left refrain from voting Platner because he’s scary. So it’s weird to see people who still curse the non-voters in, e.g., Dearborn talking as though Platner’s creepiness makes voting for him impossible. If you voted for Joe Biden in 2020 or Hillary Clinton in 2016, voting for this guy doesn’t represent an abdication of your previously high standards.
