I love drawing backgrounds that feel lived in.
Perfectly spotless rooms with nothing out of place, no clutter, no forgotten items lying where they shouldn't be... they're just so boring.
Don't you think it's much more interesting when the background tells its own story? It makes the people in the illustration feel like real people instead of perfect models from a commercial.
I think we've all tossed our sneakers onto the doormat at least once, draped a scarf over a shelf where it hangs down and gets in the way, or left a box of seasonal clothes sitting out because we never got around to putting it back—so now a pair of gloves is sticking out and catching your eye every time you walk past.
It's funny how little details like that can make a drawing feel truly alive.
