Hideki: (I was never good at music.)
Hideki: (Since I am born in a family of musicians, I started playing the violin before I could even read.)
Hideki: (But no matter how hard I tried⊠I couldnât get any note right.)
Young Hideki: Ah!
Young Hideki: Iâm sorry⊠I always forget the time signature changes hereâŠ
Harumichi Aoyagi: Do it again.
Young Hideki: But... Iâm a little tiredâŠ
Harumichi Aoyagi: Youâre not going anywhere until you manage to stay perfectly in time.
Young Hideki: ...Can I at least drink a cup of water?
Harumichi Aoyagi: Do it again.
Young Hideki: âŠ
Young Hideki: OkayâŠ
Hideki: (I am not even sure I have ever liked music.)
[Kamiyama High, Class 1-C]
Classmate A: Hideki!
Hideki: Mmh?
Classmate A: Weâre hanging out tonight, wanna come?
Hideki: âŠ
Classmate A: We plan on going bowling, and maybe even⊠Eh? Is everything alright?
Hideki: !⊠Oh, yes, donât worry.
Hideki: But I wonât be able to come⊠Sorry.
Classmate B: Ah, thatâs right, I forgot⊠You have that violin concert, donât you?
Hideki: Yes, thatâs it.
Classmate A: Do you think we can come? Hey, guys! Iâm changing our plans, letâs go cheer on Hideki at his concert!
Hideki: Hehe⊠I appreciate it, but itâs a classical music concert. I donât think people will appreciate if you yell my name like that.
Hideki: Now, Iâve got to go. I still have to practice before the concert.
Classmate A: Wow, so serious, HidekiâŠ
Classmate B: We should all take your example, shouldnât we?
Classmate A: See you tomorrow!
Hideki: See you tomorrow.
[A few hours later - Concert hall]
Hideki: âŠ
Harumichi Aoyagi: I had told you to play the last part forte. Why was it so weak? What were all these hours of practice for?
Hideki: Iâm sorryâŠ
Harumichi Aoyagi: Do you realize the amount of effort and energy I consume for you? Youâre the only one in this family who had made me lose my time this way.
Harumichi Aoyagi: Even Touyaâs years of practice havenât been that useless.
Hideki: (Stop comparing me to themâŠ)
Harumichi Aoyagi: Are you even listening? Hideki, Iâm warning you, from now on, you wonât do anything else than practicing when youâre not at school.
Hideki: I'm sorry.
Hideki: Iâm going to the bathroom.
[Concert hall, Bathroom]
Musician A: Hey, isnât that Aoyagi?
Musician B: No, you're⊠Damn, thatâs right, it's him!
Musician A: He really messed up tonight, didnât he?
Hideki: âŠ
Musician B: As always⊠Ah, crap! Heâs looking at us.
Musician B: Nice performance, Aoyagi!
Musician A: You look disappointed, but donât worry, youâll do better next time!
Hideki: ...
Hideki: Thank you, good night.
Musician A: His brother was so much better than him⊠And so much friendlier.
Musician B: And heâs so much full of himself for someone who canât even make the difference between largo and allegroâŠ
[Concert hall]
Hideki: (Stop⊠comparing meâŠ)
Voice: Ah!
Voice: You, there!
Hideki:
Unknown girl [Jin]: Yes, you!
Jin: My nameâs Jin Kashi... But you can just call me Jin!
Jin: Arenât you Hideki Aoyagi?
Hideki: Yes, itâs me⊠Why?
Jin: No way!⊠So⊠youâre Touya Aoyagiâs brother?
Hideki: !âŠ
Hideki: ...Yes.
Hideki: (Stop⊠Please stop comparing me to others all the time.)
Hideki: (I know everyone is so much more talented than I amâŠ)
Hideki: (So pleaseâŠ)
Jin: Thatâs so cool! I admire him so much, so Iâm so honored to meet you! Youâre a violinist, arenât you?
Hideki: !âŠ
Jin: Iâm personally a flutist! Oh, but youâre the one who played the Waltz tonight, right?
Hideki: (She talks so much itâs hard to keep up, but...)
Jin: I really like this song, to be fair. Look, I have it in my playlist!
Jin: ...Eh?
Jin: Untitled? I donât remember adding that song, whatâs⊠Wah!
Hideki: Ah!
Hideki: (Itâs so bright!)
[???]
Jin: Aa...choo! Itâs so dusty in here!
Jin: Where are wâŠ
Jin: Eh?
Miku: âȘââââ
Girl [Chieko]: âŠ
Hideki: Itâs so beautifulâŠ
MEIKO: Shh!
Girl [Chieko]: !âŠ
Girl [Chieko]: Ah⊠IâŠ
Jin: Oh⊠Sheâs goneâŠ
MEIKO: Sigh...
Miku: No, donât g-
Miku: Ah!
Miku: Youâre here! Youâre finally here! Welcome to your SEKAI!
Jin: Miku!? The... VIRTUAL SINGER? And wasnât this.. MEIKO just now?
Hideki: This⊠This must be some sort of dream⊠VIRTUAL SINGER are not real.
Miku: This is a world created by your feelings for music, and...
Hideki: ...My feelings for music?
Miku: Yes. All of you have created this world.
Hideki: What feelings?
Jin: !âŠ
Jin: (So this isâŠ)
Miku: I⊠Iâm here to help you find your true feelings. This world⊠SEKAI⊠believe or not, but you created it.
Hideki: My true feelings about music⊠I hate music! You should know it, right?
Hideki: This is just some stupid dream anyways. How do we leave?
Miku: You have to stop the song playing on Jinâs phone⊠Itâs also on your phone, so if you ever feel like coming back⊠Play Untitled.
Jin: Aoyagi⊠Are you sure?
Hideki: (Nod)
Jin: ...Okay, then. Bye.
Miku: ByeâŠ

Jin frowned. She was not exactly sure she would find GRADIENTâs last member here. The people who would play here tonight...
They were an underground niche band. A rock band.
But Miku said it was the one, and the flutist trusted her. She really wanted to believe that finding this last member would resolve her friendsâ problems.
There was not a lot of people who came to see the band. As expected... it was surely just high school students playing for fun.
But suddenly, the whispers of the crowd stopped. Three boys and two girls walked on the stage.
And she felt it. Instantly. From his first step to the end of the show, she knew it was the one.
âWe are Acrophobia! Letâs start, one, two, three!â
The drummer, a tall boy with dark hair and a mole under each eye, had yelled the bandâs name. And the first song started.
Acrophobia. The fear of heights.
Jin already knew he was scared of falling too.
The song wasnât actually bad. The members were synchronized. They had a good harmony.
The main singer and the guitaristâs voices were getting along well. Between the tall blue-haired girl and the purple-eyed boy, there was some kind of⊠alchemy?
Same thing for the other members. The bassist, a girl with short dark green hair and dark skin, was wonderfully leading the band. The keyboardist was really good as well. Jin couldnât stop looking at this talented short boy with light blue hair and golden eyes.
But, here the problem was. The drummer.
He was good.
Really good.
But his way of playing⊠it was suffocating. At some point, the white-haired girl couldnât hear anything but him. But his thoughts.
It was as if every rhythm of the song was a terrified scream.
Jin felt like she was getting hit by despair. The fear blocked her lungs, she couldnât breathe anymore. All her senses were blocked, her whole being was just desperate explosions on drums.
âMake it stop, please, just let me feel anything⊠Let me feel alive again!â
She didnât even know if whose thoughts she was hearing, his or hers?.
It felt like a second and a year, and the first song ended.
She could finally think. The air was tense, filled with energy...
Everyone was having fun, she wasnât. Jin knew the drummer was GRADIENTâs last member. And she knew it wouldnât resolve her friendsâ problems. Or his owns. Or hers.
âThanks for coming tonight! This song will be our last, so enjoy! Sweet Paralysis!â
âOne, two, three, four!â
And a new song. An other⊠How many since the show started? How much despair? How much fear had she already faced?
Sweet Paralysis started.
And more thoughts came.
And more fear.
âPlease, let me feel something!â
More thoughts, more fear, more thoughts and more fear and more thoughts more more more more thoughts fear scared thoughts

âBreathe. Youâre doing well.â
Jin blinked. She gasped and oxygen finally got to her lungs.
She was sitting against a wall, a few meters away from the crowd. The green-haired girl was ending the live show. Sweet Paralysis was over. The concert was over.
A white-haired boy with yellow eyes was in front of the flutist. Well⊠it wasnât actually white hair. It was a very, very light blue. He was looking like a high school student, like her.
His skin was pale, so pale⊠He had some freckles, like Chieko. Less than Chieko.
Chieko. GRADIENT. The drummer.
Suddenly Jin remembered.
âYou scared me a little bitâŠâ the boy continued. âI was having fun, then I turned my head and saw a girl frozen, her mouth wide open. Are you scared of crowds?â
âNoâ, she answered. âDidnât you feel it too?â
âFeel what?â, he asked, tilting his head. âAnyways, Iâm glad to see youâre fine. I really love Sweet Paralysis, you know. My twin has a solo in this song, heâs the keyboardist of Acrophobia!â
He was talkative, but not for the right thing.
âYou didnât feel it?â, she repeated. âThis intense feeling of fear in the air? Didnât you notice how the drummer was screaming his panic?â
âThe drummer⊠youâre talking about Otoda? Heâs a very talented guy, you knowâ, the boy commented. âBut no, I didnât feel anything⊠Must have been you. You made a panic attack, thatâs pretty normal to feel fearful when it happens. My brother has made a panic attack once⊠It was very scary. For both of us.â
Jin smiled nervously.
âOkay, thanks⊠uh...â
âHanae! Hanae Shun. And my brotherâs Mikoto. What about you?âŠâ
âKashi Jin, you can call me just Jin. Nice to meet you, Hanae! Thanks for your help.â
She had no time for small talk. She had to find Otoda, and make his intense fear and loneliness disappear. It was a matter of life or death.
Hanae tried to speak again, so the girl gave him her number. She said sheâd love to talk later, but that she needed to do something urgent.
Which was actually the truth. Jin was a very bad liar, so she had recently decided to always say the truth.
She got up â wait, she was on the floor this whole time? - and rushed to catch Acrophobiaâs drummer. Where was he? He couldnât have left that quickly⊠Where the hell couldâve he been⊠Oh.
âRiku, do you really think you can keep playing like that? Weâre a band. A group. So if you want to play to have all the spotlight on you, go ahead and play classical music!â
âShizuko, IâŠâ
âShut up. Do you really think no one noticed? You play louder than everyone else in the band. Youâre the drummer. Nothing more than the drummer. You and me, the bass and the drums, weâre here as servants. Without us, the others couldnât play, but we are not in the spotlight, okay? Kawasaki is the singer, sheâs in the spotlight. Shimizu is the guitarist, heâs in the spotlight. Hanae is the keyboardist, heâs in the spotlight too. But weâre here as a base for the band, so stop trying to bring all the attention on yourself.â
Jin hid behind a wall. It was impolite, but her name was not Setsushi Chieko.
âYouâre wrong, Iâm not trying toâŠâ
âI said shut up. If you do that ever again, be ready to see a new drummer at Acrophobiaâs next concert.â
And the green-haired girl, whose first name was apparently Shizuko, walked away from him. When she arrived where Jin was, she roughly asked:
âYouâre listening to people when theyâre having a private conversation? What are you, twelve?â
The flutist wanted to answer, but before she could, the bassist had disappeared.
...Letâs not bother ourselves with her. Sheâs mad.
As soon as Jin made this statement in her mind, she heard a noise. She turned her head and saw Otoda leaving. No, no, no, no.
He wouldnât escape that easily. She had to talk to him.
The girl yelled his name.
He turned around, surprised.
He looked at her, she was already looking back at him.
And somehow, it was as if they both knew.
They had known from the very start.
From his first step to the end of the show, they knew.
He would go ahead and play classical music.
°°°
âThereâs no way Iâd join a classical music group!â He crossed his arms. âHave you seen my face? Do I look like someone who plays at recitals in front of rich kids who judge my smoking and my vibrato?â
âHave you ever considered the fact classical music is not just for the elites?â
She was trying her best to be patient. Really.
âOh, really? Not only for the elites? Then, whoâs with you? Setsushi Chieko? The fallen angel? Yourself, Kashi Jin? Daughter of a family of politicians? Aoyagi Hideki?â. He bitterly chuckled. âWait, never mind, I donât know this one. It must be another random guy Setsushi and you invited to make fun of. You know. Having two ugly friends so you guys seem prettier.â
Jin closed her eyes for a second. She took a deep breath.
âDonât you dare talk like that about Chieko or Hidekiever again.â
Her face mere inches from Otodaâs, she continued, looking at him dead in the eyes:
âThey are my friends. My best friends. Do you understand that? Oh, or maybe youâre convinced youâre the only one who has problems? Youâre scared, so you decided youâd never move on? Youâre terrified, so you stopped trying?â
He froze. Jin slowly made a step back, and crossed her arms too, challenging.
âHow do you know that?â, he whispered.
Ah. He had finally decided to lower his voice. Good. Finally they could talk.
âIâve felt it, during your show. This intense feeling of fearâŠâ, she shivered only by thinking about it again. âI felt like I was drowning, and I knew this sinking feeling was coming from you. As if it was emanating from youâŠâ
âWhat the hellâŠâ
âThe thing your leader was talking about⊠Youâre not wanting to have attention, youâre screaming to make the emptiness go away, right?â
The more she talked, the more Otodaâs eyes widened. He stammered, before asking:
âWhat⊠Who are you? How do youâŠâ
âKashi Jin, nice to meet youâ, the white-haired girl smiled. âAnd letâs say⊠I know some people who could help you, butâŠâ
She sighed, looking down.
Then looked back at him, a wide smile on her face, her arms still crossed.
âUnfortunately, theyâre either an elite or Iâm just making fun of them.â
GRADIENT is a fan Project Sekai unit composed of Aoyagi Hideki, Kashi Jin, Setsushi Chieko and Otoda Riku.Â

MAIN STORY :Â
After Toya Aoyagi stopped playing classical music, his father put much more pressure on the little brother:Â Hideki, who played the violin. Because of that, he completely loses his passion for music but can't find himself telling his father. Hideki keeps playing the violin, without any passion, and ends up hating music as a whole, including his brother's.Â
One day, Hideki has a recital, and randomly encounters a flutist:Â Jin Kashi. He doesn't know her, but as soon as he tells her his name, the girl starts talking, excited. She recognized him: Toya's brother, her idol's brother. Jin starts explaining to Hideki how his brother is why she keeps playing music, because the way he puts his feelings in his music moves her.Â
Hideki, who completely lost his desire to play music, suddenly sees a ray of light, of hope: could this happy and talkative girl make him change his mind about music? Could she actually convince him that music is worth fighting for?Â
Later, they find a song on Hideki's phone, an untitled song. When Jin clicks on it, both of the two musicians are teleported in a different place: their SEKAI. It's a music conservatory, but strangely, for Hideki, it feels⊠comfortable. Something he hadn't felt for a so long timeâŠ
They are interrupted by a woman shushing them. A brown-haired girl is playing the piano and a blue-haired girl is singing. When the pianist notices Jin and Hideki, she suddenly panics, stops playing, and disappears from the SEKAI. The woman who shushed them sighs and walks away.Â
The blue-haired girl introduces herself as Miku, and explains that the girl who played the piano, is the only one who ever came here⊠That MEIKO never talks to her, never sings, never plays any instrument. That her friends never came, and that now Chieko is gone.Â
Later, Jin and Hideki find Chieko again and convince her to form a group with them. She is a well-known prodigy, but also a really shy girl. She finally accepts, but still seems reluctantâŠ
A little while after GRADIENT is formed, Miku confess that someone is still missing. That there's still a person who needs to find their feelings with GRADIENT, but that this person is filled with fear and even forgot how to feel.Â
But time flies, and Hideki still can't find his feelings about music, Chieko slowly loses her ability to play and even the cheerful Jin looks like she doesn't enjoy playing music anymore.Â
Nothing goes right, so Miku decides to force things: MEIKO will only pull Hideki down, and the GRADIENT members are too lost in their feelings to find the fourth member.Â
She gives Jin the last name, the drummer of the group:Â Riku Otoda. Jin, who only wants everyone to be friends, tries to convince Hideki and Chieko to meet this Riku with her, but she can't. Hideki slowly loses his hope and is even getting worse than before while Chieko is publicly reduced to the prodigy who can't play anymore. Her self-esteem is at the worst.Â
So Jin goes alone, concerned by the shadows in the mind of her friends. But when she sees him, Riku, at one of his concerts, it's even worst.Â
He looks like he plays to feel things, but can't feeling anything. His music is filled with despair and fear.Â
"Won't I ever feel something while playing music?"
Jin gets to talk to Riku, but he doesn't want to go with her. He doesn't want to risk that, so Jin decides to force him and goes with him to SEKAI by Untitled.Â
Riku recognizes Chieko: they are childhood friends, but belongs to different worlds: the princess pianist and the skater drummer. And that's exactly how he feels about GRADIENT: he does not belong to this world.Â
When Miku sees them two in the SEKAI, she's relieved but she notices that now every GRADIENT member's mind is filled with shadows.Â
Hideki hates music.
Jin is overwhelmed by all this negativity and can't even make them cheer.Â
Chieko is nothing more than the shell of her old talent.Â
Riku does not want to try new things.
But now, GRADIENT is complete, and Miku's friends will come.
GRADIENT's music will be heard, and Hideki, Jin, Chieko and Riku will finally be linked by the same feelings.Â
They're not that different.Â
CHARACTERSÂ
Hideki Aoyagi: GRADIENT's leader and violinist. He hates music and can't hope anymore. Lives in the shadow of his older brother Toya.Â
Jin Kashi: GRADIENT's flutist. She always tries to make everyone cheer but can't end up hurting them and hurting herself.Â
Chieko Setsushi: GRADIENT's pianist and singer. Extremely shy girl who used to be known as a prodigy, but slowly lost her piano skills and got bullied again for this downfall.Â
Hatsune Miku: SEKAI's host. Born from Hideki's unconscious will to keep playing classical music. Her friends never came to the SEKAI but she's determined to make them come to help GRADIENT.
Kagamine Rin: Born from Chieko's breakdown. Harpist. Eternal perfectionist, she considers that Chieko shouldn't give up, and must try until she succeeds.Â
Kagamine Len: Born from Jin's happiness to play. Oboist. He made her understand that she also can play for herself, and not only for the others: that she had to be the first one who mattered for herself.Â
Megurine Luka: Born from Riku's fear to keep playing with GRADIENT. Organist. She showed him how Chieko overcame her shyness and anguish to keep playing with GRADIENT. She promised him he was not alone anymore, and that even if the worst times, she would be with him.Â
MEIKO: SEKAI's host. Born from Hideki's abandonment in the search for his love of music. Cellist. She made Hideki understand that if he doesn't want to play, he doesn't have to.Â
KAITO: Born from Hideki's determination. Conductor. Pushes Hideki to keep playing at least for the other GRADIENT members.
SIDE NOTES
Hideki Aoyagi is canonically Toya Aoyagi's little brother. I own Hideki's character, but not Toya's. Toya Aoyagi belongs to Colorful Palette.Â
All my character are MINORS.Â
I would love to make GRADIENT grow into a real project, if youâre interested, DM ME!! I'd be so honored!Â
I know GRADIENT's story is very based on Toya's existence. I am not a Toya fan. GRADIENT was just an OMORI joke when I created it.Â
Thank you for reading my little Project Sekai story. Take care of Hideki, Jin, Chieko and Riku. đ
