When I was in grade two I sat next to this guy in class for a few months. And whenever we came in from lunch we would wait for the other to show up and then we would see whoâs water bottle had more in it, and drink just enough to even it out. Then we counted down and chugged as fast as we could, until one was empty. Whoever finished first was the winner. @ Liam if youâre reading this then hi

Welcome Back!
Welcome to a new school year! I am very excited to be teaching Grade 2, and am looking forward to working with you this year. As well, we are joined by some new staff members and students. Please help to welcome them into the St. Matthew school community.
Today I can add âAlright, the spit bubbles are done, thatâs six of you that have drooled on yourselves and itâs gross.â To my list of improbable things Iâve said while teaching. At least we have moved on from poo? Oh bodily secretions, how you enrich my grade 1/2 teaching experience...

Playing a game of Monkey in the Chair (basically, thereâs a song, and one child is the monkey and makes up an action, and then the class repeats the action, and then the âmonkeyâ changes and we do it all over again) and the âmonkeyâ (who am I kidding, they are ALL ACTUAL MONKEYS) decided to drop and start doing pushups. So, sure, Iâm okay with pushups as a music class action, why not. Or at least I WAS, up until one of the more volatile emotional/behavioural children in that class went to do a pushup, flopped on his face, and yelled âOh shit!â (fortunately the rest of the children either didnât notice or didnât know it was a bad word). Every adult head in the room immediately whipped around â we probably looked like Meerkats sensing danger. Kid was fine â he flopped deliberately, and it was definitely the HAPPIEST âoh shit!â Iâve ever heard a student yellâŚ
Not even 5 turns later, the young âmonkeyâ decided to start dancing and waving her arms over her head â holding both middle fingers out. In the split second I had to decide whether to address it or encourage the other children to join in, I decided that I did NOT feel like explaining that particular gesture to a room full of grade 1 & 2 students.
And that is the tale of how I spent a portion of my afternoon with approximately 30 4-to-7 year olds enthusiastically dancing around and giving me double middle finger salutes. These are the moments Iâm always desperately glad Admin does NOT walk in onâŚ
adding to my list of reasons I've sent children to the office, today while doing actions for a song with the lyrics "Canada is a country made for love" (the correct actions, incidentally, being making a heart shape with both hands right in front of your chest), one particularly ADVENTUROUS young soul decided to kneel down and make the heart shape somewhat lower. More specifically, he very nicely framed his friend's crotch. Close enough to touch. *headdesk* Does it make it better or worse that this song is the finale to our spring concert, and that said concert is on Wednesday, making it the last time this particular class will practice before performing?
Top moment of last week was when I was sitting in a chair, stepped down into a box of legos, and fell in front of the whole classroom. I deserve an award for not accidentally swearing. Honestly though nothing builds rapport between you and a class like them all laughing at you in pain.Â
