Every Mario Character Update #20
VS. Wrecking Crew (Arcade, 1984)
You may think its a VS. adaptation of the NES game, but this one actually came first! And there's a weird axe guy that never came back!
If you think I missed anyone or you don't recognize someone, please let me know!
Don't get grabbed by a Gotchawrench, or it'll use its Righty-Tighty ability to twist you into the ground! They're not very fast, but their ability to quickly incapacitate opponents makes them dangerous. Avoid them when they start sliding with their mouth open!
Wrecking Crew '98 is now on Switch Online! Now everyone can experience the obscure, clunky, frustrating puzzle game that gave us the modern Gotchawrench design.
Wrecking Troops (Wrecking Crew)
In this redraw of Eggplant Man, I had him be joined with his other wrecking buddies. Sadly, Gothawrench Jr. had to be left behind.

Name: Gotchawrench
Debut: VS. Wrecking Crew
Haha, gotcha wrench! Now you donât have the ability to tighten bolts on buildings! Take that!
...Not that it really matters. Gotchawrench only appears in Wrecking Crew and alternate versions of Wrecking Crew, where Marioâs job is to destroy buildings with a hammer. Not much need for a wrench when youâre destroying a building, Iâm afraid!
...Which makes Gotchawrench more upset! He saw Mario as a carpenter at some point, came up with this whole scheme, and when he finally starts his wrench-stealing antics, Mario has picked a new career entirely? Why if that doesnât just bust your bolts! Gotchawrench now has to show Mario what-for!
In most stages of Wrecking Crew, youâll find Mario being chased down by Gotchawrench, this lovely wrench-shaped fella you see above! In the days of Wrecking Crew, there werenât many âspecial behaviorsâ enemies had, so all Gotchawrench really does is follow Mario around, hoping heâll catch him. He even brings his son, Gotchawrench Jr., who is more-or-less the same, but red instead of purple (Gotchawrench is purple, the image is just in black and white) and a little bit slower. A weaker color variant! Never heard that before!
Gotchawrench returns in Wrecking Crew â98, where he now looks more like a monkey wrench than any other plain olâ wrench, has a spiked collar, and has arms. Wrench-stealing is a lot easier if you have arms to steal wrenches with! That being said, I like the original Gotchawrench a little more! It feels Newer Gotchawrench might have just a detail too many, and loses a bit of that silly enemy charm!
That being said, I think itâs time Gotchawrench makes a comeback. Marioâs a plumber now! That job needs way more wrenches than demolition! Think of the look on his face, when you finally gotch his wrench! Iâm rooting for you, Gotchawrench.
On a final note, the Mario Wiki describes Gotchawrench as looking âlike a dinosaur.â I mean, in a universe where Poochy counts as a dog, I guess this can be a dinosaur, but I have no clue why anyone would look at this and have âdinosaurâ be the first thought. The species of this Weird Mario Enemy is clearly... wrench.
Here are all of the alternate colors I made for Gotchawrench! Most of them are based on the various depictions of Gotchawrench from the early games and related media.
NES1 - Based on the sprite for Gotchawrench Jr. (Spannergon 1) in the NES version of Wrecking Crew
NES2 - Based on the sprite for Gotchawrench (Spannergon 2) in the NES version of Wrecking Crew
VS - Based on the sprite from the Vs. Wrecking Crew arcade machine
Flyer1 - Based on artwork in early promotional flyers for Vs. Wrecking Crew
Flyer2 - Based on artwork in later promotional flyers for Vs. Wrecking Crew
Yoshi - Itâs Yoshi, but with Bowserâs collar
Gotchawrench
Released: Sep. 11, 2020 Type: Assist Trophy / Enemy Game: Wrecking Crew '98
This mechanical monster has one goal: to harass demolition workers! And also construct Bowser's bases... and also help destroy them? Wrecking Crew is a weird series. Gotchawrench will chase down fighters and smack them with a fierce headbutt. The SPNG-98X model is the only Assist Trophy and Subspace Emissary enemy capable of climbing ladders and ledges.
I originally started this model back in February 2018, but I put it aside in order to focus on finishing Raphael the Raven's Castle and handling model submissions. While I consider Gotchawrench to be just an Assist Trophy, I know some people will prefer a full-fledged fighter, so I gave the model more features and added extra props. I even created a set of eye textures based on the Puppet Fighters in Ultimate's World of Light. I know the rigging on the noodle limbs aren't great, but I did my best. The model is designed such that you can remove the arms entirely like in the original design.
