Top: The popular fan-made fighting game Pokémon Close Combat features a unique final boss for its Arcade mode: Gorochu, an original design based on Raichu's famous scrapped evolution from the first generation games. Defeating Gorochu leads to a QR code "For Hall of Famers Only", with instructions to not share or stream the code anywhere.
Bottom: Gorochu's trainer, who appears when it is defeated, is based on Zubaz, a character popularized by the YouTube channel Super Best Friends. Zubaz was inspired by a piece of concept art for Street Fighter II showing a scrapped character design. Zubaz would go on to appear in games such as Divekick, Petal Crash, and Shovel Knight, which the design in Close Combat seems to be specifically inspired by.
With Zubaz being a scrapped character from a fighting game, and Gorochu being a scrapped character serving as a fighting game's final boss, the connection between the two characters is clear.

I'd like to clear up some Pokémon misinformation that has been bothering me for years, as someone who has spent dozens of hours learning about the development history of the series.
This is not Gorochu. This is not official art by Ken Sugimori of Raichu's scrapped evolution. This is fanart of its concept made by Foxeaf on DeviantArt in 2018. It's very good art with a really interesting take on the scrapped Gorochu.
This is all we have of Gorochu, along with the description of it "having two horns and fangs". That's it. Sugimori has never drawn Gorochu officially. It's likely that it was scrapped reasonably early on into development given it never had a front sprite. It comes from an era where Pikachu wasn't even finalized - being more daifuku-like and when it didn't have its cheek spots yet. That's how far back we're talking.
There are actual scrapped Pokémon with official art like Deer, Crocky, Balloonda, Jagg, Godzillante, Gorillaimo, and everything to have come out of Spaceworld '97. Please stop using this art of Gorochu as an "official" design. It's excellent work by Foxeaf and deserves to be appreciated for its designwork and accuracy to the watercolor Sugimori style, but it is not what Gorochu definitively looked like.
5 Years 343 Days! I liked that one fusion so much that I turned it into its own fakemon
5 Years 341 Days! I think this one is my favorite collage mon I've done so far. SOMEONE compared it to gorochu and now that's what it is

They really divided gorochu in half (I kinda like it)
Ok, so I found out that Gorochu art is actually uncredited fan art that's been mistaken for official for years, so I deleted that post
Don't get me wrong, just about every redesign of mega Raichu I've seen have been better then the original, but the amount of people using fan made Gorochu art as a reference is driving me mad. Real Rai-heads know that the only legitimate image we have of it is a leaked back sprite from gen 1 and that's it
THANK YOU I feel like I'm losing my mind. Not only do people keep sharing uncredited fan art (here's the artist btw), but it was drawn before we had Gorochu's sprite so it's not even accurate. And all we have of the sprite is this and a statement that it "had horns and fangs and looked like a [raijin]:
The only similarity the new megas have to Gorochu is that the X form has little fangs. That's it.
(Also going to shamelessly plug my Gorochu interpretation from a while back while I'm here because why not:)
(High-res version  |  Support me on Ko-fi) Special thanks to Helix Chamber for providing the canon backsprite! Gorochu is, in my opinion, th
