Gordon Russell learned about furniture construction by overseeing restoration work in his father's antiques business. Eventually, Gordon took over the shop space for his design company, Russell of Broadway. Gordon manufactured Arts & Crafts furniture and Cotswold School styles in English oak. He was a proponent of clean, simple design that could be manufactured with machinery, instead of all hand work, much to the dismay of Arts & Crafts furniture workers whose aesthetic relied on hand work and finishing. Post-World War II, Gordon's brother, the #architect #DickRussell, took over much of the design work, although the company employed many #designers throughout the decades, including W.H. 'Curly' Russell (no relation), Ray Leigh, Trevor Chinn, David Booth, Eden Minns, Martin Hall, and Robert Heritage. Gordon's design work influenced decades of design and continues to inspire. The #mahogany #wood tea trolley (or bar cart) pictured here a rich finish, is well constructed, and in very fine, clean condition. The Russell of Broadway stamp and unit number is underneath the bottom shelf. The casters roll smoothly and have brass covers.
