After midnight, the country grows quiet.

The roads around Soap Lake, Washington disappear into darkness, the summer heat softens, and above the open landscape the sky seems to stretch forever.

Peyton Gold #23 slips into the warm lake wearing nothing but his gold lamé speedo, the fabric catching little flashes of moonlight before the dark mineral water closes around him.

For a while, Peyton simply floats.

No crowd.

No noise.

No destination.

Just warm August air against wet skin, gentle ripples moving beneath him, and thousands of stars scattered across the blackness overhead.

Then—

a streak of light.

A shooting star burns silently across the sky.

Peyton smiles.

Another follows a few minutes later, bright enough to reflect faintly across the surface of the lake. He turns onto his back and lets the water carry him, watching the heavens as though the entire night has opened just for him.

There is something wonderfully romantic about being alone beneath a sky like this.

Not lonely.

Just alone enough to notice everything.

The warmth of the water.

The coolness beginning to gather in the night air.

The smell of the dry Washington countryside.

The distant shoreline resting in darkness.

The shimmer of gold against Peyton’s skin whenever moonlight finds him.

And above it all, the stars.

Soap Lake itself makes the moment even more unusual. Its waters contain an exceptionally rich mixture of minerals, and for generations people have visited the lake for its distinctive water and mineral mud, traditionally associated with rest, bathing, and renewal.

Tonight, though, Peyton needs no explanation.

Floating beneath the Milky Way while another meteor flashes overhead, he understands exactly why a place like this can feel special.

Some summer nights are meant for adventure.

Some are meant for company.

And some are meant for slipping quietly into a warm country lake after midnight, looking toward the heavens, and remembering how beautiful it feels simply to exist beneath the stars.
