Going Places 1x03 "Another Saturday Night"

Ron Fassler (Alien Nation). Another episode of Not-So-Perfect Strangers. This time, Hallie Todd is the focus when Kate places a personals ad to get out of playing Monopoly every Saturday night with Charlie (Alan Ruck). Imagine the “hilarity” when Charlie answers the ad! After only 3 episodes, it feels like the show is completely out of ideas. It doesn’t help that the cast has no chemistry. Never mind that they don’t feel like real friends; they don’t even feel like real people. They feel like cardboard cut-outs being put through motions by writers who have a vague idea of what a sitcom is. Sept-Oct 1990: ABC Friday after Perfect Strangers, before 20/20. Going Places 1x02 "Born to be mild"

Lisa Fuller. Wow, this show really wants to be Perfect Strangers. In this episode, Larry, uh, sorry, I mean Charlie lies about owning a Porsche so he can date a beautiful receptionist. There’s even a bit where Jack and Charlie sit on chairs and mime a car–echoing a famous sequence from Perfect Strangers. It doesn’t work here because it feels forced. The segments from the hidden camera show they are all working on are horrible. Cringe TV. Sept-Oct 1990: ABC Friday after Perfect Strangers, before 20/20. Going Places 1x01 "Welcome to L.A."

★★★★★☆☆☆☆☆

Unfunny pilot. Brothers Alan Ruck (Spin City) & Jerry Levine (Bronx Zoo) head to LA to join TV show writing team, sharing beach house with other writers Hallie Todd (Brothers) & Heather Locklear (Spin City). Clearly meant to emulate the success of Perfect Strangers, it has none of the charm/laughs. All the physical comedy feels forced, as does the big emotional scene between the brothers at the end.
