From here, the man runs along to create a wretched family of his own.

Me, finishing Goethe's Faust, part two after rereading parts one and two: well, thank goodness that's done. I really enjoy this work, but it takes a long time for me to read and it's a lot of work, so I'm glad I can move on to something else.

As I mentioned in one of my previous posts, I think their relationship is built on mutual jealousy.

Faust envies that Meph is able to comprehend the ultimate wisdom and grasp the universe, yet doesn’t use it or take it seriously

Meph envies that Faust still cares about things enough to feel strong emotions, has aspirations, yet doesn’t cherish those feelings, thinking of them as a cause of his suffering

Through the course of “Faust” Henry tries to study the world, while Meph tries to study Henry (both fail miserably but in different ways)

Faust goes to heaven not because of his understanding of the world, but because of a part of him that wanted to be a good person (this was neither his main priority nor an essential part of his character). He was never rewarded for his ambitions, they were just forgiven for his other qualities. I think heaven would just euthanize his brain into a constant state of bliss, so he wouldn’t wish for more.

Meph failed to understand Faust in time before he went to heaven, so he still can’t feel anything. To reassure himself that Faust totally wasn’t important to him and totally didn’t give him hope to have a more meaningful existence, Meph tries to find people similar to Faust to prove that they are fools and are not worthy of his attention (this is a set up to the plot of my “Master and Margarita” AU).
