Goblin Castle
okay so, seeing as this post resonated with a lot of people, i've decided to make a part 2 adding slightly more specific goblin tips i've learned over the past year. here we go
things you can do as a goblin in the modern age pt. 2:
knit yourself a funky little coin purse β or ask a friend or purchase one from a local artist. you'll feel a touch of whimsy every time you have to pay for something small
buy jewelry secondhand. not only is it cheaper, but if you don't want it to tarnish, you'll find no better guarantee than jewelry that's already lived one life and still looks fairly new. and if you like your jewelry tarnished, what better place to look than secondhand stores?
keep a watering can in your bathroom. while you're waiting for the shower to warm up, fill up the can with the excess cold water, and use it to water your plants later
lemons. just. have lemons around. trust me. there's always a good use for lemons (for example, if you're allergic to citrus, just spray them in the eyes of your enemies)
mini emergency kit! carry one everywhere!! i've got a small pocket in my go-to backpack full of band-aids, tissues, hand sanitizer, painkillers, pads, mints and lens cleaner :)
rest. resting is an act of resistence, especially in a system that worships financial and performative productivity above all else. any chance you get to rest, claim it without guilt
leave silly little notes for people on public transport. i wrote "have a nice day" in marker on an empty ad board in the subway last week
cherish the dead time. in spanish, "dead time" is the time you spend doing nothing, e.g. on your commute, waiting in line, etc. cherish that time!! find meaningful things to fill it with, like music or reading or drawing or simply breathing in the silence. dead time is where we thrive
find joy wherever you can. i mean it. the world's gotten a whole lot darker since i made my original post, and that darkness is getting harder and harder to live with. finding joy is no longer a luxury, it's an act of survival. reach out to friends and tell them you're lonely. learn the name of the old man who sells trinkets on the same corner every day and greet him on your way to work. maybe share a cereal bar with him if you can. sing out loud over the music in your headphones. eat a damn apple. chop off all your hair. be angry without remorse. be sad without remorse. be happy without remorse. remember you are alive, you are a plant and an animal and everything in you is older than whatever bureaucratic bullshit is trying to convince you you're a cog in a machine. be alive. find joy everywhere and store it like nuts for the winter. it's going to be a long winter, and we're all going to need a whole lot of joy. don't forget to share it
