Anyway, content warning for F15 and brief appearance by Gaiman (who is told exactly what a lot of us want to say).

And I think that's why, at first watch, Aziraphale's decision to go back to Heaven would most likely be sudden and confusing, because GO2 didn't much delve into Aziraphale's need to protect/preserve/help the world. He "chose" Heaven because he wanted to make a difference for Earth (and for Crowley); he wasn't doing it for himself. Hell, I think a part of why he thought Crowley would agree in joining him is because they've always shared the same motivation: to do it for the world. And by not focusing much into that would of course confuse the audience, because then it would seem like Aziraphale chose Heaven because Heaven is good, the position is great, and bla bla bla, and Crowley denied because he's spiteful and he's a demon and he only cares about Aziraphale and bla bla bla.

I believe that a reason why Crowley didn't agree was because he knew that Aziraphale knew Heaven's hypocrisy and how the upper-ups didn't care about the world that he and Aziraphale so dearly love, which meant he was probably blindsided when Aziraphale told him of the promotion because he thought they were doing it for the world, not for their sides.

Confession aside, Aziraphale going back to Heaven (without properly delving into his reasons why) is mad confusing and heartbreaking because it SEEMS to go against their ONLY moral code: their partnership and what they do during and with it is for the world.

GO1 highlighted this with, like, idk, the whole Armageddon thing on its own, especially with Adam, and even the little things that my mind can't provide right now. I suppose GO2 is essentially a more character-focused arc — but then again, I think they did fall a bit short on some things about that, too. Maggie and Nina as aziracrow's parallels could only do so much (I love you, Maggie and Nina, you deserved better), because if you strip away that and just leave them with the whole Gabriel thing, I think it's a bit... all over the place.

I mean, just the Gabriel thing is already all over the place, and not to mention, a bit not high-risk...? It's a bit more calm, I suppose. I guess it only got higher stakes when the demons already figured out where he was, but other than that, everything else could've gone smoothly if they stopped for a moment and had a good brainstorm.

Idkkk, I just suddenly had this thought and it nagged at me. What makes aziracrow's partnership (and characters) strong and reliable is their love for the world (aside from their love for each other) (how many times have I said word in this?), so when GO2 fell a bit short in still showing and reminding us of that, everything is bound to be confusing.

Absolutely no hate to GO2, of course. I guess this is a critique on it? I love it so much but, of course, I can't help but notice things. I don't think I'm even coherent right now! Regardless, these are my thoughts and mine only, which I could not help but tell you. Thank you, Steph! 🤍 Omydaysss, sorry for long ramble!

You make an excellent point, and now it has me wondering if some of that was part of cut content for S2 (I think I read somewhere that they had like 9 hours' worth of content? Unless I'm delululemonade) in favour of focussing on their relationship. I DO know that S2 was meant to be a bridge between S1 and S3, and I think that their relationship was ALWAYS meant to be the primary focus of it so that them getting together in the end made sense. And yes, it IS weird that they never emphasized Azzie's love for humanity in the way that S1 did, but I DO see it implied in the actions he takes throughout the season (which is why I am of the belief that S2 is primarily Azzie's perspective), so that you can see how much he loves the world by being a large part of it.

It's also one of my theories on how S3 will end... that Crowley and Azzie CAN'T be erased from the Book of Life BECAUSE their interference throughout history is SO monumental that to erase them essentially erases human history itself.

ANYWAY, back to your point: I personally prefer S2 myself. I know it's not a popular opinion, but their relationship is genuinely all I cared about in S1, so S2 was a HUGE treat for me, and when they CANONIZED Aziracrow (for the most part...), that just made me love the season more, because I felt – and still feel – super confident that S3 will give us a satisfying conclusion that canonizes them HAPPILY.

But yes, the lack of showing "to the world" more textually rather than subtextually did make for people being incredulous at Aziraphale's choice. You and I know that he did it because he genuinely loves the world and he was feeling lost in S2, being untethered from Heaven of sorts. He even says it in his speech to Crowley "we can make a difference", which I think is really the only textual confirmation of "to the world" they do in the season. But on the surface, yeah it looks selfish, especially when he learns what's coming and he still goes anyway.

ZCLKHLKXHCKLZHXCLIHZCLKH NONNY OMG. I ADORE THIS SCENE SO MUCH!!!!! Honestly, I LOVE S2 because they're SOOOOOO SOO precious the two of them!!!!

One of my fave scenes is the one at the pub where they sound JUST like Michael and David arguing about Jane Austen, LOL. OOOO and the ADORABLE little squeal of delight from Angel Crowley in the beginning. GOSH!!! Honestly S2 is SO full of adorable scenes!!! AHHH Nonny!!!

BUT ANYWAY WE'RE SUPPOSED TO BE TALKING ABOUT AZZIE!!! He is SOOO cute in S2! I LOVE THIS ONE HERE:

LIKE AZZIE YOU'RE SO SILLY AND PRECIOUS AND I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!!!!! AHHHH. This whole scene is so SO funny because you KNOW Crowley will give in because WHO CAN SAY NO TO THAT FACE?? Hee hee. He's such a little bastard because I do think he knows he has Crowley wrapped around his pinky and will inevitably get his way (we're gonna, for argument's sake, ignore the final 15, that's a whole other can of worms in my brain)

Ugh, I love Azzie and his little autistic-coded self. I relate so hard to him, good lord.

OH! And this one too!!

He's SO SILLY. I love him.

ANYWAY I'll be here forever, because I adore Azzie so much and I could probably give you like 50 more scenes in S2 where Azzie is just being so precious. I've been rewatching the entire Season 2 (and realized I actually love it A LOT more than S1, unpopular opinion, I know) and I've just been rewatching all my fave scenes <3
