Take a close look at this mosaic found in the House of the Faun (Italian: Casa del Fauno), which constructed in the 2nd century BCE in Pompeii, Italy. The House of the Faun was an upper-class residence, evident from the exceptionally high quality of craftmanship and materials used in its decoration. October 16th is Global Cat Day! This observance was created in 2001 to encourage people around the world to take steps to improve the health of and reduce the numbers of unowned outdoor cats in their communities. Cat fanciers can celebrate the day through actions like supporting local shelters and getting involved in local Trap-Neuter-Return programs (there is, in fact, such a thing as too many cats!). This gif was created from an 1889 glass plate negative in the Hagley Library’s P.S. du Pont Longwood photographs collection (Accession 1969.002). The photograph was taken at Phillips Academy, where Pierre S. du Pont’s brother, Henry Belin du Pont, was a student from 1888 to 1890.
