Costume designer Elizabeth Waller created this extraordinary white gown for Glenda Jackson to wear in the title role of the BBC’s 𝑬𝒍𝒊𝒛𝒂𝒃𝒆𝒕𝒉 𝑹. Waller’s costumes from the production won an Emmy for best costume design, and the gowns went on to be reused in numerous productions.   It was later seen in David Starkey’s 2001 documentary 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒊𝒙 𝑾𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑯𝒆𝒏𝒓𝒚 𝑽𝑰𝑰𝑰, where Julia Marsen wore it as Anne Boleyn. Mary, Queen of Scots (1971). Kind of on a period film kick - The Lion in Winter, Anne of a Thousand Days, A Man for All Seasons, Elizabeth R, Elizabeth I: The Virgin Queen, Elizabeth. This Mary had killer performances from Oscar nominee Vanessa Redgrave & Glenda Jackson. Also, watch out for a blonde Timothy Dalton acting out as Lord Darnley, Mary’s ill-fated husband.

Elizabeth Waller created this spectacular gown for the magnificent BBC miniseries 𝑬𝒍𝒊𝒛𝒂𝒃𝒆𝒕𝒉 𝑹. The costumes would eventually win Waller a much-deserved Emmy for best costume design.   This gown, which appears quite different depending on the lighting, has been used in multiple productions. This yellow gown was designed by Margaret Furse for Glenda Jackson to wear as Queen Elizabeth I in the 1971 film 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒚, 𝑸𝒖𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝑺𝒄𝒐𝒕𝒔. The sleeves are distinctive and a hallmark of several gowns she created in not only 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒚, 𝑸𝒖𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝑺𝒄𝒐𝒕𝒔 but also 𝑨𝒏𝒏𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑻𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑫𝒂𝒚𝒔.   The costume was made over – or perhaps – toned down, for use in the 1974 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑭𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝑴𝒖𝒔𝒌𝒆𝒕𝒆𝒆𝒓𝒔: 𝑴𝒊𝒍𝒂𝒅𝒚’𝒔 𝑹𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏𝒈𝒆, where it was worn by Faye Dunaway as Milady de Winter. The parlet and ruffles on the sleeves have been removed, the underskirt swapped out, and some gold trim has been added to the front of the bodice. This red Tudor gown was designed for Glenda Jackson’s portrayal of Elizabeth in the wonderful 1971 miniseries 𝑬𝒍𝒊𝒛𝒂𝒃𝒆𝒕𝒉 𝑹. 🤩 The gown was loosely based on a painting by William Scrots of Elizabeth as a young princess. 🎨   The dress went on to be used in the 2000 documentary 𝑬𝒍𝒊𝒛𝒂𝒃𝒆𝒕𝒉: 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑨𝒄𝒄𝒍𝒂𝒊𝒎𝒆𝒅 𝑺𝒂𝒈𝒂 𝒐𝒇 𝑬𝒏𝒈𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅’𝒔 𝑽𝒊𝒓𝒈𝒊𝒏 𝑸𝒖𝒆𝒆𝒏, 👸 where Imogen Slaughter wore it. Interestingly, the dress appears to have been made over to resemble a more accurate representation of Elizabeth’s gown in the Scrots portrait. The partlet was removed, pearls and jewels were added to the neckline, and new sleeves (from the coronation gown from 𝑬𝒍𝒊𝒛𝒂𝒃𝒆𝒕𝒉 𝑹) were added, among other changes. 👗   The dress would be seen the following year in another documentary 📺 – 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒊𝒙 𝑾𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑯𝒆𝒏𝒓𝒚 𝑽𝑰𝑰𝑰, where an uncredited actress wore it as Princess Elizabeth.   It was worn several more times over the years, but we cannot document them all on our social channels.
