Gierhan is Amastacia’s trainer, not her bodyguard, but that doesn’t stop a girl from dreaming

- Gierhan has been Amastacia’s ranger trainer since she was about thirteen years old. He was a human man from the rural end of the island on which Amy lives.

- Gierhan was a man who listened more than he spoke, and who had a keen eye for when people’s feelings contrasted with their words and actions, which was important for Amastacia because she is extremely steeped in pretense.

- He’s very dad! In fact he had a wife and young son named Chantelle and Carver respectively. When they met up for training, it wasn’t unusual for Gierhan to be like “and then the second important part of today’s lesson is for you to come home and eat dinner with us.” Sometimes they sent Amy home with a jar of pickles (her guilty pleasure) and something Chantelle crocheted for her. Her yellow hair scarf is one of these.

- Though he was often quiet, Gierhan had a playful streak with those he knew well. With most people, Amastacia insists on being referred to by her proper name and title, but Gierhan was allowed to call her Pinecone due to his habit of tossing pine cones at her whenever she was being a brat or getting too serious. He was also the type to jokingly try to push her into creeks to “keep her vigilant.” She very quickly became good at dodging. In reality both of these were to humble her and break down her need to be perfect by making her look harmlessly ridiculous where no one else could see and judge.

- Amy has a relentless work ethic and an unhealthy obsession with being worthy of her destiny. Gierhan saw this (correctly) as destructive, so instead of pushing her to work harder, he actually spent more effort trying to get her to loosen up, have fun, and develop an identity outside of what other people expect of her. Anything she showed interest in, he would try to find a way to help her experience it. He had to be sort of subtle about this because she considered anything not related to training to be a waste of time, and she’s very stubborn. The second he got explicitly preachy she’d be like "hm ok I wasn’t listening, show me how to shoot backward so Mother will say she's proud of me.”

- Amastacia’s mother has spared no expense with getting her adventuring equipment with all the bells and whistles possible, but when it comes to her bow, arrows, and other tools, all of it has been hand-made by either Gierhan or Amy herself with his help. He taught her the importance of being able to make the things you need and make them well.
