Sleet and snow blew in and smothered what had once been late spring, disrupting the uneven flow of seasons to suit its mistress' desires. Ingvar's fragile blooms stood no chance against icy winds blowing thick through the frosty air. Ruby, in her fine fur coat remains unmoved by the poor giant's sorrow, disinterested in his grief over something as mortal and breakable as annuals.
"Do you blame me for the passage of time?" she asks, cold as the day around them. "If so, then you must surely thank me for allowing them to sprout, and for all the roses that survived, no?" Were she not herself, perhaps these would be fair questions. So few beings have such total control over what lives and dies in their realm, yet Ruby refuses to allow her favored rose bushes to wither even as the snowdrops and daisies crunch underfoot, frosted over before they even had a chance to wilt.
