cap broke into button house because he was commanding officer there, and he felt he deserved to be there. he had no idea whether or not havers was alive, let alone whether or not he'd be at button house. he falsely claimed to be a hero, he falsely claimed someone else's glory to do so. then was called out for it in front of an entire room of people who did earn that glory, who did see the horrors he was falsely claiming he saw. he had no lie prepared, so was caught out almost immediately. sure, being blocked from seeing havers when he realised he was there played into his stress, but ultimately he died because he was stressed at being called out for a very serious transgression, with no way to refute it.

sure, he was obvious as fuck and homophobia played a role in the disrespect he received, which probably played a role in his stress levels there too, but like. he died of a stress induced heart attack because he fraudulently claimed medals that weren't his, after breaking and entering an event he was barred from.
