Relationships: Edwin/Charles; minor Crystal/Niko; past Edwin/Simon

Summary: Three years after the fight that ended their friendship, Charles gets a call that Edwin has been hit by a car and is in the hospital with a badly broken leg and a concussion. With no one else to take care of Edwin during his recovery, Charles has no choice but to step up. In the days that follow, old feelings come bubbling to the surface, and it turns out neither of them are as ready to let go as they thought.
***
When the shrill ring of his phone cuts through his flat, Charles is still half-asleep, lazing in bed with his face buried in his pillow. He snuggles deeper under the covers, waiting for the ringing to stop, because he canât think of a single person who should be calling him right now. Crystal and Niko know not to call him before noon in the mornings after he works late at the pub. He just talked to his mum the other day, and she usually calls at night, well after his dad is in bed. Itâs probably someone trying to sell him something or a wrong number, and Charles isnât getting out of bed for that. The phone stops ringing and Charles enjoys a moment of quiet before the answering machine kicks on.
âHello,â a womanâs crisp voice says. âMy name is Vera and Iâm calling from St. Vincentâs Hospitalââ
Charles rockets out of bed, kicking away the sheets that tangle around his legs. The woman is still talking, but he canât hear what sheâs saying over the pounding of his heartbeat in his ears. Stumbling into his kitchen, he snatches the phone off the wall in a white-knuckled grip. âHello?â
âCharles Rowland?â She sounds perfectly calm, like she isnât calling from the bloody hospital of all places.
âThatâs me,â Charles manages to say, even though he feels like his heart is lodged in his throat. His mum promised that things were better with his dad since he retired, that Paul Rowland is a changed man now, but Charles never really believed it. But if his dad has finally landed her in the hospital, Charles⌠well, he doesnât know what heâs going to do. He canât make her leave the old cunt; heâs tried and failed more times than he can count.
âIâm calling from St. Vincentâs Hospital on behalf of Edwin Payne,â Vera says. âHe gave your name as his emergency contact.â
Charlesâs half-asleep brain canât quite comprehend the words, confusion overtaking the previous terror. For a moment, he wonders if heâs dreaming, if his sleeping mind thinks itâs 1993 and that he and Edwin are still best mates. âEdwin? Edwin Payne? Brown hair, green eyes, mole on his chin?â
âDimples,â he doesn't add. âAnd beautiful hands and a smile that makes you want to do anything to get another one out of him.â
He can practically feel Veraâs judgment over the line. âEdwin Anthony Payne,â she says slowly. âDate of birth January 18th, 1973.â
Charles remembers Edwinâs twentieth birthday, the last one they celebrated together three and a half years ago. Edwin and Simon had just broken up for what really seemed like the last time, and Charles had been trying to hide how thrilled he was, because Edwin seemed properly miserable. Charles, Crystal, and Niko surprised him with a nice dinner and a lopsided cake that Charles and Niko made from scratch. Itâd been a good night and by the end of it, Edwin was smiling, leaning back in his chair with a glass of wine, cheeks flushed and eyes bright.
And thenâŚ
Well, it didnât matter, did it? Apparently, it had never mattered. Edwin and Simon got back together a month later and not long after that, Charles and Edwin had the blowup that ended over five years of friendship in one horrible night.
âHe was admitted here this morning.â Veraâs voice cuts through his reverie. âHeâs asked for you.â
Finally, it sinks in that itâs a hospital thatâs calling about Edwin. Edwin is in the bloody hospital. âWhat happened?â Charles demands.
âIâm afraid I canât share many details over the phone,â Vera says. âBut there's been an accident and heâs in surgery now.â
An accident. Surgery.Bloody hell, Edwin hates hospitals. He hates fluorescent lights, loud noises, and people he doesnât know touching him, and all three of those things are unavoidable in hospitals. The thought of him alone there makes Charlesâs heart hurt. And he must be alone, because thereâs no way he would have asked them to call Charles otherwise.
Maybe he hit his head. Maybe heâs delirious. Maybe heâll be furious when he gets out of surgery and finds Charles waiting for him. Maybe Charles should tell Vera sorry and hang up, because this isnât really his problem. Edwin doesnât want it to be Charlesâs problem. But Edwin asked for Charles, and even if he didnât really mean it, Charles has never been able to say no to him, not since their first day back at St. Hilâs.

Summary: Prince Edwin Payne of Hilarion, accompanied by his first knight and childhood best friend Sir Charles Rowland, travels to the kingdom of Townsend to secure the peace treaty between the two nations. Upon arrival, he is told that he is to be wed to the infamous Cat King, Thomas Kitt of Catting, the man who notoriously betrayed his kingdom to pledge his loyalty to the Witch Queen, Esther Finch; however, Edwin and Charles quickly learn that not at all is as it seems in Townsend, especially when it comes to the Cat King. In fact, if any of them plan to survive this marriage unscathed, they must all learn to trust one another â both with their lives and with their hearts.
Excerpt:
He knows what the Cat King and Queen Esther surely expected of him tonight, that Edwin would come to his wedding night the trembling virgin sacrifice, suffering stoically in the name of the treaty. Perhaps thatâs what a dutiful prince of Hilarion would do, offer up his body for the good of his family and his kingdom. Itâs what Edwin was planning to doâas so far as heâs been able to plan anything about this ordeal.
But Edwin has tried so very hard to be the prince that his family expects him to be. In seven years, he hasnât stepped a single toe out of line. Because he learned what happened when he failed, first from Charlesâs blue lips and battered face, and later from his own broken fingers and burned arms in a fortress far from home. Edwin has done everything right and heâs still ended up here, cast away as easily as the shipment of grain that came with him. He imagines his father lost more sleep about giving up the grain.
He doesnât know what happens after tonight. He still doesnât know if there is an after tonight for him. But if the Cat King is offering pleasure, then pleasure Edwin will take.

Summary: When Charles, who operates as the vigilante known as the Blue Phantom, is killed, Edwin dons his partnerâs suit in order to seek revenge on the people responsible. But his mission is complicated by the appearance of a new vigilante in town, one who appears to be working with the villainous Esther Finch, and who seems strangely familiar.
Excerpt:
âCharles Rowland,â Edwin tells his fianceâs voicemail as sternly as he can manage when heâs going a truly unwise speed through East London, causing more than one pedestrian to dive out of the way. âYou had better not be doing what I think youâre doing.â
His carâs Bluetooth informs him that he has a text message from Crystal Palace, but he swipes it away.
âBecause if youâre doing what I think youâre doing, youâve gone to confront Esther Finch in her own bloody penthouse,â Edwin continues. âWhich as we discussed just this morning, would be monumentally unwise, the least of all because she will happily see you jailed for breaking and entering, if she doesnât flay you alive first. Because, oh yes, sheâs the most powerful witch weâve ever encountered.â
Another driver flips Edwin off as he jumps up onto the sidewalk the pass them, which is fair enough.
âWe agreed that we would be cautious about dealing with Esther and David,â Edwin reminds his wonderful, infuriating beloved. âMeeting Esther on her home territory is not cautious. Or must I remind you of the Evil Seagull Incident of 2023?â
He can see Esther Finchâs towering luxury building, even though heâs still several blocks away. Even though Christmas was two weeks ago, many of the windows still glitter with lights. If Charles is in thereâŚ
âCrystal and Niko are on their way,â Edwin continues. âIf you cannot wait for me, then I ask that you at least wait for them. Youâre the one who always wants them along as backup.â
Another text, this one from Niko. Edwin swipes it away as well. All that matters is getting to Charles right now.
âAnd I hope you realize weâre going to have another discussion about your impetuous behavior,â he says. âBecause, really, Charlesââ
The call disconnects as he exceeds the time limit for voicemails. Swearing, Edwin punches his carâs screen to call Charles again.
âThis is Charles,â a painfully young-sounding Charles of fourteen years ago, when he recorded his voicemail message while sitting next to Edwin in the St. Hilarionâs dining hall, says. âLeave a message, and Iâll ring you back later.â
âYou had better ring me back,â Edwin snarls. âBetter yet, you had better be waiting for me outside Estherâs building, safe and sound. If youâre hurt, Charles, I swear to GodâŚâ He breathes out hard through his nose. âI love you. I am going to throttle you, but I love you. Be safe.â
He disconnects the call right before he throws his car into park on the curb in front of Esther Finchâs building. He leaps out of the car, craning his neck to look up.
On the top floor of the tower, Esther Finchâs penthouse is lit up, golden light glowing from behind every window. Edwin can just make out a figure standing on the balcony, backlit by the illuminated windows. Seventy stories below, Edwin canât make out any details of the person, but he doesnât need to. He just knows.
âCharles!â he shouts.
Charles doesnât seem to hear him. Of course he doesnât hear him; Edwin is nothing but a speck on the sidewalk seventy stories below, his voice undoubtedly lost in the sounds of London around him.
âIâm coming,â Edwin whispers to the far-away figure of the man he loves, starting for the front door. Heâs sure heâll have to talk his way past a security guard, but he can throw around the Payne name if necessary.
Above him, the night seems to light up with a percussive boom.
Edwinâs head jerks up as the top floor of the building explodes into flames, glowing against the night sky. The balcony where Charles was just standing is gone, swallowed up by fire.
Edwin screams. He is still screaming when Crystal and Niko get there.
***
Itâs the coldest day London has had in nearly a decade when they bury Charles.
Charles never liked the cold. He was always stealing what he called Edwinâs âold man jumpersâ or warming his icy feet against Edwinâs calves under the covers. Were he here right now, he would be pressed up against Edwinâs side, like he was thinking of crawling right under Edwinâs winter coat so they could share body heat. Edwin would roll his eyes and remind Charles that he would be far more comfortable if he would just wear a proper coat.
âYou saying my coatâs not proper, mate?â he can practically hear Charles demanding, mock outraged, smoothing down the lapels of the pin-studded coat he picked up at a thrift store in Year 11.
But of course, Charles isnât here.
Niko has her arm linked through Edwinâs; he can feel the warmth of her gloved hand through his coat. Her breath mists in the air in front of her in little gasps as she tries and fails not to cry. Edwin wonders if the tears will freeze right on her lashes. On her other side, Crystal stares at the coffin in front of them like she can will the lid to swing open and Charles to sit up with a rakish smile and an apology for keeping everyone waiting.
Except, all thatâs in that coffin is ashes, a cricket bat, Charlesâs beloved, battered old jacket, and a few other small keepsakes.
Thereâs a sparse gathering of mourners around the graveside: some of their old classmates, a handful of Charlesâs colleagues, as well as his students and their families, a few neighbors. The Rowlands stand side by side on the other side of the coffin, Mrs. Rowland weeping into her hands and Mr. Rowland looking vaguely annoyed and apathetic, like heâs waiting for a delayed bus. Edwin canât look at them for long, or the urge to push Charlesâs father into the open grave will grow too strong.
He expected more in attendance, given Charlesâs effortless way of charming everyone he met. He supposes they were put off by the press gathered behind the police barricades surrounding the Payne family plot, watching the proceedings with the intensity of hawks circling a dying rabbit. Edwin is grateful for the towering statues and mausoleums that mark his relativesâ graves; they offer protection from prying eyes.
Mr. Rowland didnât want Charles buried here. Heâd claimed that it wasnât right, because Charles and Edwin hadnât been married yet. Edwin had pointed out that he was paying for the funeral, and if Paul Rowland wanted Charles buried elsewhere, he could by all means be the one to fund the proceedings. It didnât take long for Charlesâs father to have a change of heart, if the miserable bastard even has a heart.
The priest says his last words and the other mourners begin to disperse as the coffin, laden with flowers, is lowered into the ground. Soon all that are left are Edwin, Crystal, Niko, and the Rowlands. None of them speak, their focus on the wooden box that contains all thatâs left of the best person Edwin has ever met.
When Crystal touches Edwinâs arm, he startles. She grimaces apologetically and says, âWe should go.â
Edwin doesnât want to go. He belongs here at Charlesâs side, just like he always has. But there will be a reception back at Payne Manor, and it wouldnât do to miss it. He nods silently and lets the girls steer him out of the plot. He was hoping that the press would have left by now, but there are still a few stragglers. One shoves a microphone in Edwinâs face as he passes.
âDo you have any comment on your relationship with the Blue Phantom?â the man asks eagerly. âDid you know your fiance was a vigilante?â
âHis name wasnât the fucking Blue Phantom,â Edwin wants to say. âHis name was Charles Paul Rowland, and he was my best friend. He died protecting this city, and the rest of you keep acting like this is some sort of circus act. I wish London would have burned instead of him.â
A hand lands on his back before he can open his mouth. âMr. Payne has no comment,â Asa Nurse says coolly, steering Edwin through the gathering of journalists like theyâre not even there. Edwin expects resistance, but the press parts for her, just like people always do. Charles once joked that Ms. Nurse could convince the tides to stop if she just gave the ocean really stern look.
âThank you,â Edwin murmurs to her.
Ms. Nurse isnât one for sentiment; she didnât even shed a tear when his parents died, though she had worked with them for decades. So heâs surprised to see that her eyes are glistening with unshed tears when she glances back at the Payne family plot. âOf course,â she says, then clears her throat. âIt wouldnât do for you to fisticuffs with a pack of journalists. Not on camera, at least.â
âWhat about off camera?â Crystal is staring down the pack of journalists like sheâs thinking of putting them in the ground along with Charles.
Ms. Nurse shoots her a warning look. âThe fervor will die down,â she says. âSo long as we donât give them anything else to write about.â
Edwin wishes he had her certainty.
âSome of us can afford media attention less than others,â Ms. Nurse tells Crystal pointedly.
Behind them, Edwin can hear the reporters talking among themselves. Theyâre laughing, like this is just another day on the job, like the world hasnât ended. Edwin wants to scream in their smug faces. He wants to leave them feeling just a fraction of the despair that has weighed him down for the past week.
âCome on,â Niko whispers, squeezing his arm, and Edwin lets her pull him away. He doesnât look back at the grave, trying not to picture Charles alone in the half-frozen ground.

Summary: When Charles and Niko are caught up in a sorcererâs love spell, Crystal and Edwin have to save them. But in order to fit in with the besotted couples surrounding them, they need to pretend to be madly in love while they do it.
After this, breaking the spell is going to be easy.
***
âWhat the actual fuck?â Crystal says as she looks down from the balcony at the canoodling couples filling the ballroom. Every single pair seems completely lost in each other, gazing into each other's eyes and smiling dreamily. The partygoers seem to be a mixture of ghosts, humans, and assorted supernatural beings. She even sees a centaur in the mix and makes a mental note to ask Edwin about that later when he's in a better mood.
âQuite.â Next to her, Edwin has his fists pressed together in front of him as he surveys the crowd with the air of a disapproving dowager aunt.
âDo you see Charles and Niko?â Crystal cranes her neck, trying to catch a glimpse of Charlesâs bright red polo or Nikoâs white hair, but she doesnât see any sign of them.
âIâm afraid not.â
âBut theyâre here, right? I mean, the tracking spell brought us here.â
âI donât know, Crystal. Iâm not the psychic medium. How about you tell me if theyâre here?â
A retort rises to Crystalâs lips, but she bites it back. In nearly a year of working for the Dead Boy Detectivesâname change under review, once Edwin gets his head out of his ass, since their number now includes a psychic medium, a not-quite-undead girl, and an interdimensional beingâsheâs learned the difference between when Edwin is trying to be a dick, and when heâs just overwhelmed or afraid. And Charles has been gone for a whole eight hours, which is the longest he and Edwin have been separated since Port Townsend. No wonder Edwin is freaking out a bit.
âWell, I think thatâs one of our missing ghosts.â Crystal points to a ghost in head-to-toe pink spandex, her hair a poufy cloud of curls. âTammy, right? The one who died on her way to aerobics class?â
âShe does fit the description.â Edwin looks even more unimpressed by the spandex. âIt stands to reason that if the other missing people are present, then Charles and Niko surely are as well.â
âGreat,â Crystal says. âNow, how do we find them?â
For the past week, they've been looking into a series of disappearances where the missing people seem to have declared their love for someone--a random stranger, a passing acquaintance, a friend they had no interest in before, and on one occasion a sworn enemy--out of the blue, and vanished with their new object of affection. They've had three separate clients come to them with cases, and discovered a half dozen others while investigating. But there are at least fifty people, if not more, crowding the ballroom.
And somewhere, Charles and Niko are here.
They seemed fine the last time Crystal saw them this morning, when they left the office to go talk to a witness from the latest disappearance. It took hours for Edwin and Crystal to realize that something was wrong after they never returned. And when they went to investigate, they found people talking about a strange, white-haired girl who had been going around, giggling and gazing lovingly at thin air. As far as they could tell, Niko and Charles never even made it to the witnessâs house to question her.
âSo someone is casting love spells on peopleâŚand what, luring them to a party at an old castle in the middle of nowhere?â Crystal asks.
âAs we've already discussed, love spells arenât a real thing,â Edwin says, pinching the bridge of his nose. âLove is something that can't beââ
âManufactured, I know.â Crystal thinks Edwin may be a secret romantic, but he'll only get pissy if she tells him that. âTell them that.â
She points to Tammy, who is nuzzling noses with a ghost who, according to her friend, she can't stand. âAnd it's not even the fun, sexy type of hate,â Debbie, who had been hit by a bus along with Tammy and was spending an eternity in neon green spandex, told them. âLionelâs just sort of a chauvinistic twat.â
âPerhaps a lust spell,â Edwin says.
âTheyâre not dry humping on the dance floor, Edwin. Theyâre acting sweet. Like youâd act if you were in love with someone.â
Edwin clears his throat and yanks at his bow tie. âYour point, while unnecessarily crass, is a good one. Perhaps, weâre dealing with some kind of altered lust spell.â
âAltered to be a love spell?â Crystal asks archly.
He harrumphs. âThe particulars of the spell donât matter. What matters is finding Charles and Niko, getting them to safety, and figuring out who is doing this and stopping them.â
Crystal can't argue with that. All those empty smiles are starting to freak her out. âWe should try talking to her.â She nods to Tammy. âIf nothing else, she might have some fashion tips for you.â
Edwin rolls his eyes, but doesn't protest, which may as well be enthusiastic agreement from him. They make their way down the stairs to the ballroom below, weaving their way through starry-eyed couples. Tammy and Lionel are clutching each other's hands and gazing into each otherâs eyes, wearing soppy expressions. Remembering how much Debbie insisted that Tammy hates Lionel, it makes Crystal feel a little sick.
âTammy?â she asks.
Tammy doesnât even look at her, still smiling at Lionel.
Crystal does something she tried to never do and leans through Lionel so sheâs face to face with Tammy. The one time she did that to Edwin, he was as shocked and offended as if sheâd just given him a wedgie. Lionel doesnât even seem to notice. âTammy?â she tries again.
Tammy blinks, seemingly puzzled to see Crystalâs head sticking out of her belovedâs chest.
âSorry to interrupt,â Crystal says. âBut Debbie sent me.â
Tammy blinks again. âDebbie?â she says slowly, like she doesnât recognize the name of the woman sheâs been haunting a crosswalk with for over forty years.
âYeah, Debbie, your friend,â Crystal says. âSheâs really worried about you. You just took off without saying anything.â
âWorried?â
âYeah, maybe you could come with us? Just really quick, so Debbie can see that youâre okay.â
That seems to jog her into something resembling awareness. âOh, but Iâm right where Iâm supposed to be.â Her gaze goes soppy again. âWith Lionel.â
âAnd how did you arrive here?â Edwin asks from behind Crystal.
Tammy looks confused again. âI⌠well, IâŚâ
âDid you come of your own volition, or were you brought here?â Edwin asks.
âHe brought us here,â Lionel says dreamily. Itâs weird to hear him speak while her head is still stuck through his torso, so Crystal retreats.
âWho is he?â she asks.
Lionel is still gazing at Tammyâs face like itâs a work of art. âHe brought us together.â
âYes, we gathered that.â Edwinâs voice only grows more impatient. âBut again, who is he?â
âHe knew I needed someone,â Tammy says. âHe knew I needed Lionel.â For the first time, she turns to look at Crystal and Edwin. âBut why are you here?â
Lionel also turns to stare at them, a spark of something that worries Crystal behind his glassy eyes, and she remembers that there isnât a single pair in the room that isnât gazing lovingly at each other or kissing sweetly. Not a single pair, except for Edwin and Crystal. And Lionel and Tammy arenât the only ones who have noticed; other heads are swiveling towards them as more lovestruck couples start to realize that they donât belong here. Crystal feels like she just stepped into a horror movie.
Stepping sideways, she links her arm though Edwinâs and gazes up at him with her best impression of Tammyâs soppy smile. âHe brought us here too,â she breathes. âWe just want to thank him for bringing us together.â
Edwin stares at her with the wide-eyed expression of someone facing down the firing squad.
Crystal steps on his foot. It does nothing, since heâs a ghost, but it seems to get the point across.
Belatedly, he seems to realize what sheâs trying to do. âYes.â He pats her awkwardly on the arm. âWe are most grateful. If you could point us to him, weâll leave you to yourâŚâ He waves a hand vaguely at the happy couple.
Tammyâs expression goes back to being dopey and lovesick. âOh, isnât it wonderful?â
Edwin flashes a thin-lipped smile. âWe couldnât be happier.â
It may not be the most professional, but Crystal canât help but fuck with him, just a little. âIâm so happy he brought me to my Eddie-poo.â
Edwinâs eye twitches.
âI havenât seen him,â Lionel says. âHeâs probably getting ready for tonight.â
âTonight?â Edwin asks.
âDidnât he tell you? He told us all to wait, because something exciting is coming.â
Well, thatâs ominous. Crystal exchanges looks with Edwin. âThanks,â she tells Tammy and Lionel, but theyâre already back to clasping each otherâs hands and nuzzling noses, like they need to make up for the two minutes they spent talking to Edwin and Crystal instead of gazing into each otherâs eyes.
âWas that really necessary?â Edwin hisses as he and Crystal walk away from the couple.
âLook around you,â Crystal says through gritted teeth, still trying to keep her expression adoring. âWeâre the only ones here who arenât under a love spell, and they totally clocked us. Do you want them to figure out weâre intruders and bring us to him?â
Edwin doesnât bother arguing with her that love spells donât exist, which shows how rattled he is. âThe Eddie-poo was surely not necessary.â
Crystal bats her lashes. âA good detective does what she must.â
He breathes out hard through his nose. âIf you must refer to me as something besides my given name, I will not answer to Eddie-poo.â
âFair enough.â She giggles and pats his cheek. âNow try to stop looking like youâre constipated.â
âGhosts do not getââ
âTry to look in love.â Crystal wants to tell him to look at her like heâd look at Charles, but that will just cause an argument. She leans her head on his shoulder, gazing up at him. âWhere do you think the guy who brought them here is?â
âHe might be out, finding new victims. Or he might be somewhere else in this house.â
âThatâs going to take all day to look,â Crystal mutters. âThis house is enormous.â
âIndeed,â he says grimly. âSo keep an eye out for someone who doesnât appear entirely besotted.â
âUnless heâs blending in really well.â Crystal scans the crowd, but doesnât see a single face that isnât smiling dreamily. Then her eyes fall on a flash of red and she grabs Edwinâs arm. âCharles!â
Edwin whips around, eyes going wide when they fall on Charles and Niko, who stand in the far corner of the room, half-hidden by a statue. Niko is leaning back against the statue, and Crystal canât see her face, but she can picture the way sheâs probably smiling right now, and it makes her stomach twist. Charles is leaning down to whisper in her ear, his face hidden by her hair. Her shoulders shake as she giggles.
Edwin starts to pull away from Crystal, his gaze riveted on Charles and Niko.
âWait.â Holding onto a ghost takes some work, especially when that ghost doesnât want to be held onto, but Crystal digs her fingers into Edwinâs arm and manages to hang on. âWe canât just run up to them!â
âWhy not?â Edwin asks through gritted teeth.
âLook around you! No one else here gives a shit about anyone except the person theyâre in love with. Itâs going to be really obvious if you run across the ballroom to get to Charles and Niko!â
For a moment, he looks like he might argue, before he seems to accept that sheâs right. He doesnât admit that, of course, just lets out a defeated huff. âI suppose they donât appear to be in distress.â
âNo.â Crystal darts a quick glance at them. âThey look really happy.â
His mouth twists into a complicated shape. âIndeed. If Tammy and her beau are any indication, we may have better luck finding the person who cast this spell and stopping them, rather than trying to convince Charles and Niko to leave.â
Crystal glances back at them, finding Charles smiling down at Niko. Charles smiles a lot and in the nearly a year that sheâs known him, she's learned that he seems to have a smile for any situation. But she knows that smile. Sheâs also never seen it directed at anyone who isnât Edwin.
âTammy said sheâd been waiting for Lionel,â she says, pieces clicking into place in her head. âBut that doesnât make any sense, since she hated him two days ago.â
âVery little of this makes any sense,â Edwin grouses.
âBut remember what Debbie said about Tammyâs husband?â Crystal asks. âTammy hasnât moved on yet because her husband visits the place where she died every year on her birthday. She wonât move on until he stops coming. She spends the rest of the year waiting for him. You said love canât be created through magic, but what if this spell isnât creating anything? What if itâs just...transferring it. Tammy now loves Lionel in the way she loved her husband. And Charlesââ
âNow loves Niko the way he loves you.â Edwin's eyes fill with the gleam of excitement he always gets when they start making progress on a case. âCrystal, thatâs brilliant.â
Crystal just manages to resist the urge to roll her eyes, because Edwinâs trying to be nice. Charles's insistence on not telling Edwin outright how he feelsââbecause what if he's changed his mind, Crystal,â like Edwin Payne ever changes his mind about anythingâand Edwinâs insistence on believing that Charles and Crystal are star-crossed lovers, not two people who made out twice before they decided they're better off as friends, got old within a month of leaving Port Townsend. âSo I guess we just need to figure out how to break it.â
âIt could be as simple a fix as them being confronted with the true object of their affection,â Edwin says.
At least that should be easy enough in Charlesâs case, Crystal thinks. But what about Niko? She has no idea who Niko is in love with. She tries not to feel a pang of hurt that Niko hasnât confided in her about having a crush, because thatâs not the point right now. But theyâre best friends, arenât they? They live together! Crystal sort of thought they told each other everything.
Unless, has Niko picked up on Crystal's hopeless crush on her? Is she just trying not to hurt Crystal's feelings, or does she think Crystal would make things weird? Would Crystal make things weird? She made the last guy who rejected her walk into traffic, after all, and sheâs trying to be a better person, but little flares of the old Crystal pop up now and again. Fuck, is Niko afraid that Crystal would make her walk into traffic?
âCrystal,â Edwin says impatiently. âIf I could have your attention, I was under the impression we were here to solve a case.â
âSorry.â Crystal drags her attention back to Edwin, trying to look like sheâs talking to the man sheâs madly in love with.
âI was saying,â Edwin says. âThat finding their paramours isnât a viable solution for all these people. For one, Tammyâs widower is in his eighties, lives in Dover, and as far as we know, is unable to see ghosts, so getting him here would be difficult, if not impossible.â
âWhich brings us back to needing to find the fucker who did this.â
Edwin nods, lips twitching into a small smile. âPrecisely.â
Crystal returns his smile. It always feels good to be in sync with Edwin, even if she wonât ever admit it. âTime to do some snooping?â
He sniffs. âI prefer the term âinvestigating.ââ
âYeah, and I prefer not to be spending my Saturday sneaking around a creepy party.â When he starts to turn away, she tugs him back. âRemember, we need to act like weâre in love.â
âIf we must,â Edwin says in the tone of someone who would prefer to relive those seventy-three years in Hell.
Crystal has to give it to him; Edwin does at least try to look like heâs madly in love with her as they meander around the house. His version of trying to look madly in love mostly seems to be forcing his lips into a thin-lipped, frozen smile and occasionally patting her hand. Crystal tries to channel Charlesâs heart eyes as she gazes up at him, but she doesnât think anyone could possibly match the level of adoration Charles has for Edwin.
The house doesnât reveal much, mostly empty rooms with furniture covered in white sheets and more dreamy-eyed couples. Theyâre up on the third floorâJesus, how big is this house?âwhen a door opens at the other end of the hallway. Crystal looks around to see a man step out of a room. Heâs alone, and heâs walking right towards them.
Thereâs no time to hide; the only reason he hasnât seen them already is that heâs looking at his phone.
âFollow my lead,â Crystal hisses, grabbing Edwin by the front of the shirt and dragging him backwards so that sheâs leaning back against the wall, his body between her and the hallway, blocking her from view. Standing up on her tiptoes, she presses her lips against his.
Once, when Crystal was thirteen, her friends dared her to kiss a mannequin in a department store. Kissing Edwin is a lot like kissing that mannequin. He goes completely still against her, his lips pressed into a thin line against hers. Even if she wanted to slip her tongue into his mouthâwhich ughâshe doubts she could wiggle it between his lips. When she opens her eyes a slit to look up at him, she finds his eyes open, staring at the wall behind her like heâs thinking about phasing right through it and running, or maybe just sinking through the ground to return to Hell.
Footsteps approach. Crystal does her best impression of a dreamy sigh, not that the man walking by even spares them a glance. From over Edwinâs shoulder, Crystal gets a decent glimpse of himâabout thirty, tall, fair-haired. The hand gripping his phone sports a ring with a giant blue stone on its middle finger, at odds with his otherwise uninspired clothing. She waits until heâs vanished down the steps before she releases her hold on Edwinâs shirt. Immediately, he steps back.
âSorry.â Crystal wishes she could walk through walls. âI didnât want him to realize we werenât one of the couples heâd kidnapped.â
âItâs quite alright,â he says, even as his lips purse in disgust. âAs you said, a good detective does what she must.â
Crystal canât help but wipe her mouth with the back of her hand, even though ghosts donât have any spit. Sheâs going to need so much Listerine when she gets home. âBut weâre never telling Charles and Niko about that, right?â
âHeavens no.â
âGreat,â she says. âThen letâs go see what he was doing in that room.â
âCapital idea, Crystal.â He turns on his heel and power walks down the hallway towards the room, probably trying to . Crystal doesnât try to stop him; thereâs no one else in the hallway to notice theyâre not exactly acting like a happy couple.
They find a study cluttered with books, papers, and shelves filled with vials of colorful liquid. Without exchanging a word, Crystal goes to search one side of the room while Edwin goes to the other. Crystal touches each bottle, trying to get a read on what they are, but only gets brief glimpses of the man from the hallway standing over a stove or chopping up potion ingredients. Sheâs about to head to the closest bookshelf when Edwin says, âHere.â
Crystal turns to find him standing behind the desk, holding a notebook in his hand, brow furrowed. âWhat is it?â
Edwin shakes his head. âUtter nonsense.â
âWhat, is it in some kind of code?â
âI donât think our culprit is clever enough to come up with a code. This is preposterous.â
âWhat is?â Crystal canât keep the impatience out of her voice.
âFrom what I gather, heâs trying to lure Desire of the Endless by sacrificing all these people and their love for each other.â Every word drips with disdain. âBecause heâs lonely and thinks he can trap Desire and force them to make his ex-wife love him again.â
Crystal stares at him. Jesus Christ, and she thought the incels she has to deal with at school were bad. âHasnât he ever heard of Tinder?â
âWhat is Tinder?â
Right, she almost forgot who sheâs dealing with. âOkay, so whatâs with the love spells? Why not use actual couples who are in love for real?â
âI donât care to do enough reading to discover his reasoning,â Edwin says with a sniff. âI imagine itâs deeply flawed. But from what I gather, heâs a mildly powerful sorcerer with delusions of grandeur. Any of the Endless would crush him under their boots.â
âIf heâs only mildly powerful, thatâs a good sign, right?â
âYou would think so, but Iâve found that often the ones with only a bit of power are the most dangerous. Theyâll do whatever they can to get more.â
âGreat.â Crystal comes to lean on the desk. âThen how do we stop him?â
âOur would-be matchmaker carries the key to the love spell on him,â Edwin says. âA ring.â
âI think I saw it on his left hand. Itâs got a big blue stone and itâs super ugly.â
âExcellent,â he says with an approving nod. âIf we destroy it, the spell should be broken.â
âNow we just need to get close enough to him to destroy it.â
âAnd how do we do that?â
âYou donât,â Mr. Incel says from the doorway of the study. He looks between Crystal and Edwin, looking more irritated than worried. âWho the fuck are you?â
âWe are the Dead Boy Detectives.â Edwin drops the notebook to the desk, showing the least amount of respect for a book that Crystalâs ever seen from him. âAnd weâre here to stop you from getting yourself killed attempting to summon Desire of the Endless.â
âActually, we donât really give a fuck if you get yourself killed,â Crystal says, unable to totally hide the little glow she feels at being called one of the Dead Boy Detectives, even if they still really need to change that name. âBut weâre not going to let you hurt all those people down here.â
âYeah?â The sorcererâs lip curls in disdain. âAnd what are you going to do about it?â
Crystal actually has no fucking idea, but it looks like theyâre winging it. She reaches into her pocket to slip on the iron knuckles she keeps for the rare occasions she has to punch someone. It doesnât happen as often as she expected after everything that happened in Port Townsend, especially since Charles is almost always in front of her with a cricket bat. But this asshole took her friends, and sheâs not about to let him get away with it.
âSurely, youâve heard the stories of people who trifle with the Endless.â Edwinâs voice drips with contempt. âIt never ends well for them.â
âIâve been planning this for years!â the sorcerer protests. âEver since Emily left me. Every detail is planned perfectly.â
Edwin raises an eyebrow with an expression that usually makes Crystal want to throttle him, because itâs usually aimed at her. âPerhaps if youâd put more effort into being a better husband and less into attempting to magically force her love, you would still be married.â
The sorcerer takes a step towards him. âYou cannot even comprehend the kind of power youâre dealing with here, you littleââ
With his attention solely focused on Edwin, Crystal makes her move. She lunges forward, iron knuckles connecting with the assholeâs jaw with a satisfying crunch. He shouts in pain as his head snaps around, blood spraying from his mouth. Spitting out what sheâs pretty sure is a tooth, he turns back to her with an almost offended expression, like he canât believe anyone would dare interrupt him.
âSorry.â Crystal draws back her fist for another strike. âVillain monologues get really fucking boring afterââ
He flings out his hand and Crystal feels like sheâd been hit by a truck. She sails backwards, landing against the wall hard enough to knock all the breath out of her lungs. Gasping, she slides to the ground, landing on her side. As the sorcerer raises his hand again, light glinting on his fingertips, sheâs reminded of the spell Esther Finch nearly killed Niko with.
To her surprise, Edwin shouts and runs at the sorcerer, a paperweight from the desk clutched in his hand. Crystalâs only seen Edwin physically throw himself at a threat once, when Esther Finch hit Charles with her iron cane. She doesnât have time to parse how she feels about that before the sorcerer whirls on him, ugly sapphire ring pointed right at Edwin. Edwin freezes, his entire body jerking.
The sorcererâs lip curls, exposing a missing incisor. âI didnât expect a stuffy little priss like you to be so full of love. Look, Iâll do you a favor. Iâll exorcise you before I kill your girlfriend over there.â
Crystal is only about a yard away from the sorcerer. She shifts a little towards him, stretching out her arm. She isnât sure if itâs just being a misogynistic asshole or that Edwin is just super infuriating, but the sorcerer doesnât seem to be paying any attention to her.
Despite being frozen by the ringâs power, Edwin rolls his eyes. âI assure you, she is not my girlfriend.â
Crystal rolls her own eyes. Leave it to Edwin to focus on the important things.
âDoesnât love you back?â The sorcerer almost looks sympathetic. âI know how that is. These bitches never appreciate the nice guys.â
Yeah, Crystal definitely isnât listening to this villain monologue. Gritting her teeth, she closes her hand around the sorcererâs ankle.
A blond womanâs furious face. âMiles, how many fucking times do I need to tell you that itâs over? Itâs been three years!â
How dare she? Who does she think she is? Does she think anyone will ever love her as much as he does, the stupid cunt?
âEdwin,â Crystal hisses, because if she has to spend too much time in Milesâs head, sheâs going to hurl. More images of the blond womanâEmily, she guessesâflash across her vision. None of them are happy memories; they all seem to be of Emily and Miles fighting, or Miles watching Emily from afar as she tries to live her life.
âThere.â Edwinâs smug voice cuts through the vision. âThat should do it.â
Releasing Milesâs ankle, Crystal blinks, letting her vision clear. She finds herself looking down at the ring, which lies in pieces on the ground, the paperweight discarded on the ground next to it.
âWhat the fuck did you do?â Miles shouts, whirling on Edwin.
Edwin stands his ground. âYou havenât just abducted humans and ghosts, but vampires, werewolves, a centaur, and at least one Fae that I saw. Every single one of them is free from your magical influence. If I were you, I would be prioritizing escaping before they realize what happened and that you were behind it, rather than taking the time to attack myself and my colleague.â
Miles stares at him, wide-eyed. âThey canâtââ
âAnd if youâre lucky, the Endless havenât become apprised of your little plot.â Edwin smiles a mean little smile. âI wouldnât count on being lucky. Theyâre quite observant.â
Crystal rises to her feet, crossing her arms over her chest and smiling viciously. âThis is the part where you run.â
Miles doesnât need much convincing; he turns and flees for the door.
âShould we actually let him go?â Crystal asks Edwin as soon as heâs vanished from sight. âHeâs really obsessed with his ex-wife. I donât know what heâll do now that his evil plan didnât work.â
âAs I said, he kidnapped a variety of supernatural creatures,â Edwin says. âI plan on seeking out the Fae in particular to tell them what happened. They arenât known for their forgiving natures. If heâs lucky, heâll only be turned into a tree.â
She canât help but snort with laughter. âYou know, youâre fun when youâre being an asshole to other people.â
âDonât get used to it,â he says, but his smile is softening. âAre you alright?â
âYeah, mostly just my egoâs bruised.â Noticing the way Edwin glances towards the door worriedly, she adds, âLetâs go find them.â
Edwin nods, looking relieved. âLetâs.â
They find Charles and Niko right where they left them. The ballroom is filled with confused shouting as people mill around frantically, trying to figure out what happened. Across the room, Crystal can see Tammy and Lionel shouting at each other. Since neither of them seem to be in danger, she turns her focus to Niko and Charles. Charles has Niko backed up against the wall, his body between her and the chaos. His expression is guarded as he takes in the scene, until his eyes land on Crystal and Edwin and his face breaks into a smile. Itâs the same way he was smiling at Niko just a few minutes ago, like heâs looking at the most important thing in the world.
âFigured you were in here somewhere, mate,â Charles says. âWhat happened?â
âA sorcerer with a fondness for love spells.â Reaching them, Edwin adjusts Charlesâs collar fussily.
âThought love spells donât exist, yeah?â
âThis one was a love transference spell. The details arenât important. What is important is that Crystal and I took care of it.â
Niko slips past Charles to throw her arms around Crystal.
âAre you okay?â Crystal demands, nuzzling into Nikoâs soft hair.
âYeah!â Niko sounds more confused than distressed. âI donât really remember what happened. I was walking with Charles, and then someone touched my shoulder andâŚâ
Crystal hugs her a little tighter. âItâs okay now. The asshole who did this is probably going to get killed by the Fae soon.â
âOh, wow, okay.â
âTrust me, he deserved it.â Crystal meets Edwinâs gaze over her shoulder. Heâs still finding items of Charlesâs clothing to adjust while Charles makes cow eyes at him.
Edwin nods. âIndeed. We can fill you in on the details back at the office.â
âRight,â Charles says, glancing back at the ballroom. âBut first, what do we do about this lot?â
***
âFinally,â Niko breathes, her cheek coming to rest against Crystalâs shoulder as they sink down onto the couch in the office. It took them hours to get back, between reassuring the victims, stopping multiple murdersâthough Crystal isnât sure if Tammy could actually murder Lionel again, not that that stopped her from tryingâand making sure everyone had a way to get home safe.
But that isnât what Niko is talking about, Crystal knows. Niko is talking about Edwin and Charles, who are standing in front of the window on the other side of the office, talking in low voices. They seem to have completely forgotten that Crystal and Niko are here. Neither of them are doing anything to disguise their heart eyes, which isnât new. They're holding hands, which is new.
Niko sighs dreamily. âI guess the love spell worked. Or love transference spell, Edwin said? What does that even mean?â
âIt means that the spell made Charles love you the way he loves Edwin,â Crystal says. âAnd it made Tammy love Lionel the way she loves her husband. I guess everyone Miles took is in love with someone else, and the spell just redirected those feelings.â
Niko is quiet for a moment, before she says, âOh.â
Crystal waits, hoping Niko will fill the silence. When she doesnât, Crystal adds, âEdwin thought I was the one Charles was in love with. Iâm guessing Charles is correcting him now.â
Charles brings their joined hands to his lips, pressing a soft kiss to Edwinâs palm. Edwin seems to melt.
Crystal snorts. âJesus, theyâre going to be insufferable. Weâre going to have to set up a system where they hang a bow tie or something on the door when we shouldnât go into the office.â
âI think itâs sweet.â Niko giggles as Edwin leans in to kiss Charles.
Crystal doesnât want to admit it, but she also thinks itâs pretty adorable. Gross, but adorable. âBetter late than never, I guess. It only took them thirty-five years. Maybe we should send Miles a fruit basket before he gets turned into a tree.â
Niko giggles again and snuggles closer.
Crystal is starting to feel a bit weird about watching Edwin and Charles make out, so she lets her eyes fall closed and gathers her courage. âSo⌠the spell made you fall in love with Charles.â
âI guess,â Niko says cagily.
âIt would have had to transfer the love from someone else.â
âOh, yeah, I guess. Should we call the Night Nurse to tell her weâre back? She was probably worried about us. Wait, does the Night Nurse have a phone? We should get her a phone.â
âWas it that kelpie from the Case of the Drowned Diva?â Crystal asks, refusing to be distracted. âThe one who kept flirting with you?â
âSam?â Niko lifts her head from Crystalâs shoulder to blink at her. âNo, they were really sweet, but they live underwater, and that didnât seem like it was going to work out. I like swimming, but not that much.â
âThen someone from school? Or from back in Japan?â
âThereâs not anyone from school,â Niko says. âOr Japan.â
Crystal knows she should drop it, because it really isnât any of her business, but dropping things has never really been her strong point. âLook, whoever it is, Iâll totally support you. Unless itâs Edwin, because ew.â
Niko smiles, looking almost shy. âItâs not Edwin. Or Charles.â
âThenââ
Niko leans in and brushes her lips against Crystalâs. Itâs a quick kiss, over before Crystal even fully realizes whatâs happening.
Crystal feels like sheâs been thrown against another wall, all the breath knocked right out of her. She stares at Niko. âOh.â
âYeah.â Niko smiles shyly, then her eyes widen as she seems to realize what sheâs just done. âUnless you donât like me back? In which case, wow, I think that spell did something to me. I feel sort of funââ
donât like me back? In which case, wow, I think that spell did something to me. I feel sort of funââ
Crystal kisses her again, a real kiss this time. Itâs a little clumsyâNiko clearly isnât a practiced kisserâbut nothing matters except the way she can feel Nikoâs smile curving against her lips. When she finally has to come up for air, she asks, âHow long?â
Niko laughs, sounding breathless. âSince Port Townsend, I think. I knew I really liked you, but I didnât realize it was love until after the spell broke and I realized what happened.â
Fuck, they really do owe that Miles asshole a fruit basket. Crystal leans her forehead against Nikoâs cheek, smiling. âIt was Port Townsend for me too. I thought the dandelion sprite lights were love at first sight.â
âKingham and Litty will love that.â
âLetâs not tell them. Theyâll be even worse than usual.â
Charlesâs voice, raised in surprise, floats across the office. âWait, you kissed Crystal?â
Crystal turns to find them still standing in front of the window, Charles staring at her incredulously. âAnd you kissed Edwin?â he asks her.
Crystal glares at Edwin, who at least has the decency to look shame-faced. âI thought we were taking that to our graves.â
He clears his throat. âMy corpse was disintegrated, so I have no grave.â
âOh no, you canât get out of this by playing the Hell card.â She jabs a finger at him. âWe made a deal.â
âIt just slipped out.â
âHis tongue was just down your throat! How the fuck did it slip out?â
âWas it at least a good kiss?â Niko asks.
âGod no,â Crystal says without hesitation.
âI once had my tongue pulled out with a pair of pliers.â Edwin pauses, considering. âThat was only slightly less pleasant.â
Crystal flips him off, but she canât stop the grin from spreading across her face. God, heâs the worst. She canât believe heâs one of her best friends.
Edwin sighs. âWe had to pretend to be under the effects of the love spell in order to blend in. It was entirely Crystalâs plan.â
âAnd it worked, right?â Crystal asks. âWe didnât get caught. Well, not until we got to Milesâs office.â
âI suppose not,â Edwin says begrudgingly. âIt was a necessary evil.â
âRight, well, you know what that means, Niko?â Charles crosses the office to hold out a hand to Niko, eyes crinkling with mirth. âGuess we need to do the noble thing and step aside, yeah?â
Niko nods solemnly as she lets Charles pull her to her feet. âWe canât get between true love.â
âNo, we canât, mate.â Charles offers her his arm. âWant to go watch sad movies and cry about it?â
She takes his arm with a smile. âI can paint your nails.â
âSounds brills.â
âThey are absurd,â Edwin says as Charles and Niko make their way towards the game closet, which now also holds an old TV and a bunch of DVDs.
âTotally absurd.â Crystal goes to perch on the desk across from Edwin. When he looks at her warily, she says, âDonât worry, Iâm not going to kiss you again. Iâd rather track Miles down and make out with him.â
âHeâs almost certainly a tree right now,â Edwin says, lips curling into a little smile. âBut excellent work tonight, Crystal.â
Her lips twitch. âThanks. You did alright too.â
In the doorway of the game closet, Niko giggles at something Charles said, and turns to beam at Crystal. Something flutters in Crystalâs stomach.
âI suppose we do make an acceptable team,â Edwin says, only a bit grudgingly.
âI guess so,â Crystal says. âLetâs do it again, on one condition.â
He raises an inquisitive eyebrow at her.
âNo more kissing,â Crystal tells him. âLike, ever.â
He snorts. âFor once, Crystal, you and I are in complete agreement.â

Summary:Â Prince Edwin Payne of Hilarion, accompanied by his first knight and childhood best friend Sir Charles Rowland, travels to the kingdom of Townsend to secure the peace treaty between the two nations.
Excerpt:
âYour grandmother will send troops,â Niko says, and Crystal knows she means it, that she has perfect faith in a woman sheâs never even met to come through.
âYou canât know that.â
âOf course she will. You asked her to.â
Crystal closes her eyes. Niko canât know how cruel Crystal used to be, back when she was the princess of Iridacia, her grandmotherâs heir, so sure of how untouchable she was. She canât know how unworthy Crystal is of an army being sent to her aid.
Niko deserves all the armies, but all she has is Crystal, Thomas, and Emma.
âSheâll come,â Niko whispers, and cuddles closer. "She will."
Crystal doesnât answer, because Niko still believes that this story might have a happy ending and Crystal canât bear for her to lose that hope, not yet. She knows that Niko is already writing the story in her head where Esther falls in a quick, bloodless battle, where Townsend and its conquests are saved, where Estherâs victims are avenged, and where they all live happily ever after, including Thomas, Prince Edwin, and Sir Rowland. Itâs a nice fantasy; Crystal wishes she could believe in it.

Rating: T
Warnings: canon-typical violence
Relationships: Night Nurse & Edwin; minor Edwin/Charles
Summary: When Night Nurse and Edwin are captured by a demon that plans to snuff them out of existence, it's hard to tell what's the bigger inconvenience: imminent annihilation or being locked in a warded cell together.
***
The chair flies through the air, hitting the heavy iron door hard enough that one of the wooden legs splinters. It crumples to the ground in a useless heap, but the door remains staunchly unmoved, locked and barred.
âThis is ridiculous!â The Night Nurse looks around for something else to throw, but the cell is empty, save for her and the ghost standing in the corner. Sheâs not quite frustrated enough to throw the ghost, though that may change shortly. âHow long are we to be left waiting here?â
It has been at least an hour, if not more, sheâs sure. The Night Nurse has attempted to keep herself busyâpounding at the walls, shouting threats through the doors at their captor, attempting to fashion one of her hair pins into an amateur lockpickâbut itâs all been for naught.
âGiven the alternative, being left waiting seems like the preferable situation,â Edwin says without looking up from the notebook heâs scribbling in. âAre you quite finished with your hysterics?â
The Night Nurse turns to glare at him. âI am trying to get us out of this infernal place.â
âEfforts that have been a resounding success, I see.â He casts a pointed look at the broken chair.Â
âI am an infinite transdimensional being. I cannot be contained by a bloody door!â The Night Nurse kicks the door in question. All it does is give her a sore foot. She resists the urge to swear and clutch at it; she wonât give Edwin the satisfaction.
âYou should inform the door of your inability to be contained,â Edwin tells her. âIâm sure it will of course open for you instantly.â
The Night Nurse takes a deep breath and pinches the bridge of her nose, trying to think. âYou could attempt to be helpful. Iâm not sure how much time we have until the demon comes back.â
âAh, yes, helpful.â Disdain drips from the word. âAs it was helpful of you to follow me when I specifically told you to stay outsideââ
She draws herself up. âI do not take orders from you.â
âJust as helpful as when you interrupted my negotiations with the demon with your shoutingââ
âNegotiations?â She sputters, outraged. âIt was about to eat you, you ungratefulââ
Edwin pockets his pen with a contemptuous flick of his wrist. He has a knack for turning the most seemingly benign gestures into insults. The Night Nurse has witnessed him fold a newspaper in a manner that felt as disrespectful as if he had spat in her face. âAnd it was so very helpful when you informed said demon that no amount of ghostly energy would make it powerful enough to open a gate to Hell, but you, as an eternal transdimensional being, have more energy than it can comprehend.â
The Night Nurseâs jaw snaps shut with a click. She can admitânot out loud, of course, but to herselfâthat that was a bit of a misstep.
âYes, so very helpful to save me from the demon so I can either be consumed later right beside you, or perhaps Iâll be lucky and Iâll just be the first soul the denizens of Hell encounter once our captor uses your power to open a Gate to the darkest, most vile depths of Luciferâs pits.âÂ
It takes the Night Nurse an irritatingly long moment to gather a reply. âAgain, do you have anything useful to add, Mr. Payne?â
He raises a supercilious eyebrow. âThis cell is layered with so many wards, Death herself probably couldn't get through. We arenât getting out on our own, so thereâs no sense in wasting our energy trying to break out. It wonât take Charles, Crystal, and Niko long to realize something is amiss when we donât return.â
âThatâs your plan?â the Night Nurse asks, incredulous. âWait for your friends to come rescue you from a demon?â
âIâve had a high success rate with that plan, yes. Until a better one presents itself, I see no need not to stick to it.â
She plants her hand on her hips and looks down her nose at himâso much as is possible when heâs over a head taller than her. âWell, I am not just going to sit around and wait for three children to rescue me.â
âThen by all means, continue throwing chairs.â Edwin waves a dismissive hand.
She does just that. She batters the chair against the door until all four of the legs have broken, then pounds the walls with her fists until her skin is scraped raw, screaming herself hoarse all the while. She kicks the door several more times, just for good measure. When sheâs done, and the door isnât open, she turns to find Edwin facing the far wall, scribbling in his little notebook once again.
âWhat on earth are you doing?â the Night Nurse croaks.
âIâve never seen wards quite like these,â Edwin says. âIâm taking notes.â
âExcellent,â the Night Nurse snaps. âIâm sure your notes will be most interesting after the idiot outside manages to bring about the end of days.â
âYes. With a gate to Hell open, people will need good wards more than ever.â
***
The Night Nurse paces, and paces some more, the only sounds in the cell her muttering and the scratch of Edwinâs pen. Her feet are starting to ache, but she canât find it in herself to be still, not when there is a demon on the other side of that door that may be about to bring an end to existence as they all know it.
She doesnât know how Edwin, who has seen firsthand the horrors of Hell, can be so unbothered by the threat of annihilation hanging over their heads. When she turns to demand just that of him, she finds him staring at the door, expression tense and fear apparent in his eyes. He takes a deep breath, seeming to steady himself as he returns to writing in his notebook. So not entirely unbothered, she supposes. That should make her feel better. It doesnât.
She intends to say something soothing. What comes out is, âThis is taking far too long. We need to figure out a way to escape on our own, as your friends do not seem to be up to the task.â
Edwin scoffs. âI apologize if the rescue isnât as efficient as you require. Perhaps we can discuss it during our next quarterly review.â
Crossing her arms over her chest, she scowls at him. âFinding us here cannot be harder than finding you in Hell. Something has clearly delayed them.â
âNothing is going to delay Charles when Iâm in danger. Youâve been with us nearly a year. You really should know that by now.â
âYou escaped Hell!â The words burst out of her.
âOh, thank you for the reminder. I had forgotten.â
The Night Nurse takes a deep breath. âYou are the only human soul in an eternity to have escaped Hell on your own. It should be impossible. It is impossible. You do not need to sit and wait for a boy with a bloody cricket bat to come to your aid.â
Real angerânot just annoyanceâflashes across his expression. âIf you think that Charles is just a boy with a cricket bat, then you clearly havenât been paying a bit of attention. Perhaps I should tell the Principal that youâve been derelict in your duties as our minder.â
They glare fiercely at each other. The Night Nurse doesnât know why she tolerates this amount of disrespect. No one ever spoke to her like this in the Lost and Found Department. Well, beside the Notary, but the Notary apparently once reprimanded Death herself for faulty paperwork, so that was only to be expected. As soon as they escape from this terrible place, the Night Nurse should go straight to the Principal and demand reassignment. Her superior has certainly made whatever point she was trying to make last year; this has gone on long enough.
âTell me, what is your plan to escape?â Edwin gestures at the door. âWill you break down the door? Force your way through the wards? Oh, wait, you already tried that, and it appears that superhuman strength isnât one of your powers. And if we do escape this cell, what do you plan to do when faced with a demon bent on using your energy to open a portal to Hell? Are you in any way equipped to fight it?â
The Night Nurse finds she has no reply.
Edwin nods. âAs I suspected. Charles and I have been doing this for thirty-five years and heâs never once failed me. So yes, Iâm content to wait for him, because Iâve considered all our other options, and this is our best one. And youâre wrong, by the way.â
âOh?â The Night Nurse huffs.
âIâm not the only soul to have ever escaped Hell. Charles also escaped Hell, if you remember.â
Once again, heâs made a point she canât argue with. âYou rely on him too much.â
âYou think I shouldnât rely on my partner, my best friend, myââ Edwin seems to bite back his words. âThe boy who walked into Hell to save me? Perhaps you donât understand what itâs like to have a best friend, but Charles will do anything for me, just as I would for him. So yes, I rely on him, because I trust him, and heâs never given me reason to regret it.â
The Night Nurse isnât sure why that stings. She hasnât had time for a best friend, of course, or for friendships at all. She has colleagues that sheâs somewhat amicable with, but how could she have time for anything else? There are so many lost children in the world, and so few people looking for them. What is she supposed to do, go out to lunch and gossip while lost souls are wandering the world, creating untold havoc?
She doesnât remember much about her life before coming to the Lost and Found Department, but sometimes she has brief flashes of chestnut curls and a bubbly laugh. Thereâs pain in those hints of memory, so she doesnât examine them. The past is in the past, after all. That friend is surely long-dead; the Night Nurse has been at her post for centuries.
âFine,â she says, and she hears the snippiness in her own voice. âThen I suppose weâll wait.â
A new installment in the Ministry of Supernatural Investigations series is up, featuring Edwin and Crystal bonding under duress, which means lots of snark, lots of danger, and the horrors of finding out that you a whole lot in common with your most annoying coworker.

Warnings: Graphic depictions of violence
Relationships: Edwin & Crystal; temporary David/Crystal; minor Crystal/Niko
Summary: During what should be a routine transfer of a demonic artifact, Crystal learns that her boyfriend and partner, David, has been possessed by a demon for years and now wants to use the tablet to open a portal to Hell. On the run with her professional nemesis, Edwin Payne, Crystal has to reevaluate everything she thought she knew.
***
Crystal doesnât need to be a psychic medium to know that her day has already gone to shit when she gets to the office on a Friday morning to learn that Assistant Director Nurse wants to see her. Itâs the last thing she needs after she and David just spent the last two weeks on an ugly case involving a jinn, a vengeful ex-husband, and a string of dead bodies all over London. Crystal barely got a wink of sleep last night, unable to stop thinking of the poor women she was too late to save, and she really wanted to do nothing today but sit at her desk and do paperwork.
âIf she wanted to debrief about the case, she couldâve just waited until she got our report,â Crystal mutters as they ride the elevator up to Nurseâs seventh floor office.
âMaybe she wants to yell at you about the unicorn thing again.â Unlike Crystal, David doesnât look like he lost a second of sleep over the jinn case. He never seems to have a problem with leaving work at the office.
Crystal glares at him. âDo you really need to keep bringing that up?â
âSorry, babe,â he says, though heâs grinning, not looking all that sorry. âYou have to admit itâs a little funny.â
Crystal doesnât dignify that with an answer, because she doesnât consider nearly getting Niko Sasaki eaten by a unicorn funny. Though in her defense, who the fuck expects unicorns to be carnivorous? Unicorns are supposed to be all rainbows and sunshine, just like Niko. She thought the biggest risk was that Niko would probably want to keep the thing as a pet, and Crystal would have to fill out a ton of paperwork about a unicorn-napping.
âRelax.â David nudges her. âItâs just a meeting.â
âYouâre not the one Nurse has it out for.â Crystalâs mom and Assistant Director Nurse used to be partners, back before Maddy transferred to the International Department and Nurse got promoted. Apparently, they loathed each other, and Crystal is pretty sure Nurse has been looking forward to an excuse to demote her to the mail room for years now.
âDoes that old bitch like anyone? Besides Payne, I mean.â
Crystal snorts. âGuess thatâs the secret to getting her to like me. Wearing lots of tweed.â
âDonât forget the stick up your ass,â David says with a smirk.
When they step off the elevator onto the seventh floor, they find one of Nurseâs assistantsâCrystal can never tell them apart and doesnât really tryâsitting at her desk and looking worried. Always looking worried seems to be a requirement of working for Assistant Director Nurse. 'âTheyâre waiting for you,â she tells Crystal and David.
Crystal exchanges looks with David, wondering who could be waiting with Nurse, before rapping on the assistant directorâs door.
âCome in!â Nurse barks.
Barely containing an eye roll, Crystal pushes open the door. Nurse sits behind her desk, wearing her usual brown pantsuit with her long red hair gathered up in twin victory rolls. Sheâs no older than her mid-forties, but she always has an air of someone who just stepped out of World War II, which might be why she and Edwin get along so well.
Speaking ofâŚ
Edwin Payne stands on the other side of Nurseâs desk. As usual, heâs posed like he should be standing outside of Buckingham Palace in a red coat and a fuzzy black hat: back straight and chin lifted haughtily. In contrast, his partner, Agent Russell, leans against Nurseâs bookcase, looking bored. Russell is a recent transfer from the International Office, a few inches shorter than Edwin and burly with a ruddy complexion and sandy hair.
At the sight of Crystal and David, Edwin looks no happier to see them than Crystal is to see him. They havenât spoken since he chewed her out after the unicorn incident, and that was fine with her. As far as sheâs concerned, the less time she has to spend in a room with Edwin Payne, the better. As for Russell, she doesnât know him well, but something about him annoys her. Heâs a few years away from retirement and he has an air like heâs doing them all a favor just by being there, when heâs an average agent at best.
âExcellent, you two made it,â Nurse says in a tone like sheâs been waiting forever, when Crystal and David came as soon as they got the message that she wanted to see them. âPlease, join us.â
Reluctantly, Crystal goes to stand next to Edwin, David on her other side. âIs everything okay?â
âFor now. Which is why Iâve called the four of you here, as weâd like it to stay that way.â Nurse sits back in her chair and surveys them. âThree days ago, Agents Kahn and Black prevented the murder of a young woman by a cult with aspirations of opening a gate to Hell.â
Crystal has heard Shelby and Irene talking about the case in the break room, but sheâs been too busy with the jinn and its master to pay much attention.
âThe cult was attempting to use a stone tablet to power the ritual,â Nurse says. âAfter thorough examination, weâve determined that the tablet is laden with a great deal of dark magic. We think it may genuinely have the power to open a gate to Hell.â
âActual Hell?â David sounds incredulous.
âFortunately for us, Agent Fisher, thereâs only one Hell that we know of.â Nurse gives him an annoyed look at the interruption. âAnd we canât be certain, as no one has any desire to test it, but itâs better to err on the side of caution. The tablet needs to be transferred to the Vault immediately.â
Crystal bites back a groan as all her plans for the weekend vanish before her eyes. Vault assignments can take days, if not weeks. Sheâs supposed to get brunch with Bekka on Sunday, and they havenât seen each other in like six month. This will be the third time in a row Crystal has had to cancel plans, and itâs not like she can tell her friends she keeps missing brunches and birthdays because sheâs chasing jinns and demons. They think she has some boring bureaucratic desk job.
âAll of you have been on Vault assignments before, but Iâll review the expectations.â Nurse gives David and Crystal a beady-eyed look, like she thinks they in particular need the reminder. âYouâll be given an hour to go home and collect your things. In an hour, youâll reconvene here, at which point one of you will be chosen at random to be handcuffed to the briefcase containing the tablet. Those handcuffs wonât come off you until you arrive at the final drop off point.â
Crystal rubs at her wrists. Last time she went on a Vault assignment, she was the one who had a briefcase handcuffed to her for over a week, and it sucked.
âAs soon as you leave London, youâll be contacted with a drop-off point,â Nurse continues. âYour destination will almost certainly change several times, so all four of you need to keep your phones on you. Youâre only to stop when instructed to for food, petrol, and lodgings. Youâre not to tell anyone where youâre going. And most importantly, whoever is handcuffed to the briefcase is not to be left unattended for even a minute.
âIf something goes wrong and someone attempts to intercept you, itâs paramount that you make it to the last drop-off point that you were given. Your first priority must be the security of the tablet. If it falls into the wrong hands, it could be disastrous. Does anyone have any questions?â
Next to Crystal, Edwin steps forward. âAssistant Director Nurse, Iâm simply wondering if perhaps more⌠responsible agents would be a better choice for this assignment.â
Nurse arches an eyebrow at him. âAnd what do you mean by that, Agent Payne?â
âCertain agents have shown remarkably poor judgment as of late.â He doesn't look at Crystal, but he doesnât have to. âIâm wondering if itâs wise to trust them with something so important.â
âAre you still being pissy about the unicorn?â Crystal snaps.
âThe unicorn that nearly killed one of our analysts because of your irresponsibility? Yes.â
âIt was a mistake.â And one that Crystal already feels really shitty about and has been raked over the coals by Nurse for. So why does everyone keep bringing it up?
âOne thatâs been dealt with,â Nurse says, to Crystalâs surprise. She figured Nurse would take the excuse to yell at her for her poor judgment again. âI selected the four of you because I think youâre the best agents for this job. Do you doubt my ability to determine which of my agents are qualified, Agent Payne?â
Edwin has the decency to look chastised. âNo, of course not.â
David snorts quietly.
âVery well then,â Nurse says, shooting David a look as if to say âI heard that.â âIf thatâs all, the four of you should go home and pack. I expect you back here in exactly one hour.â
***
âGreat, so who knows how long on weâll be on the road with Edwin and Russell,â Crystal grumbles as she and David arrive back at the MSI office an hour later, their luggage in tow. âI thought the whole point of this was to stop someone from bringing about Hell on earth.â
David smirks. âWe might open the door to Hell ourselves to get away from them.â
âJesus, David, donât joke about that here.â Crystal glances around reflexively, even though theyâre the only ones on the elevator.
âCheer up, babe.â David puts his hands on her shoulders, rubbing circles with his thumbs. âYouâre so tense.â
Crystal closes her eyes and leans into the touch. âI had to cancel plans with Bekka again.â
David huffs a laugh. âAt least you donât have to spend all morning listening to her bitch about her latest boyfriend.â
She snorts, because heâs not wrongâsheâs never met anyone with worse taste in men than her best friendâthen immediately feels shitty about it. âShe probably thinks Iâm an asshole.â
âDo you care? Last time you saw her, you said you two donât have anything in common anymore.â
âSheâs my best friend.â Which may say more about Crystalâs lack of a life outside work than how close she is with Bekka.
âHey.â He squeezes her shoulders. âItâs not that bad. Werenât you just saying we should take a vacation?â
âYeah, some vacation, lugging around a demonic artifact and staying at the shittiest motel the MSI can find.â
âYou and I can still manage to have a good time.â His voice dips seductively. âWe always do.â
Crystal shrugs him off. âIâm not fucking you in a seedy motel room, especially not right next to something that could open a gate to Hell.â
âOh, come onââ
The elevator door slides open on the fourth floor and Niko Sasaki steps on, dressed head-to-toe in bubblegum pink and smelling like strawberries. When she sees Crystal, she smiles brightly and Crystal is hit with the full force of her presence. Itâs like sinking into a warm bath; she can actually feel some of the tension leaving her.
The thing is that with most people, reading their minds means seeing that whateverâs happening inside doesnât match what they show the world. Itâs grabbing your girlfriendâs hand and realizing that sheâs thinking about another girl. Itâs hugging your mom and learning that sheâd rather be anywhere else than here with you. Itâs bumping into a nondescript stranger on the Tube and hearing their vile thoughts about you.
Itâs one of the things that drew her to David, that he doesnât bother with the veneer that everyone else puts on. What heâs thinking is what comes out of his mouth, and in turn, he never expects her to hold back what sheâs thinking either. Knowing that he means exactly what he says is a breath of fresh air after a lifetime spent pretending she doesnât know what everyone around her really thinks of her.
But Niko is one of the rare cases of someone who is just as sweet as she seems, full of optimism, joy, and warm interest that makes Crystalâs insides flutter. Itâs downright addicting being around her and knowing that thereâs no malice behind the smile she always wears. And for some reason, she actually seems to like Crystal, even after Crystal almost got her eaten by a unicorn.
âCrystal!â Niko says excitedly. âEdwin told me you two were going on a super secret mission.â
âYeah.â Crystal doesnât get why Niko is best friends with Edwin fucking Payne, but given that she lights up with happiness whenever Crystal walks into a room, she must just have shit taste in people. Or maybe Edwin is less of a pain in the ass to her than he is to everyone else, but Crystal doubts it.
âItâs less super secret if Payneâs running his mouth to everyone,â David snipes, as if thereâs such thing as a real secret around here.
Nikoâs smile dims a fraction when she looks at David, as does the bubble of happiness surrounding her. âHe just told me. We were going to have dinner tonight, so he wanted me to know why he couldnât make it.â
âSorry to deprive you of his company.â David turns a smirk on Crystal, like heâs trying to invite her in on the joke.
Crystal ignores him. She loves David, but he doesnât know when to quit sometimes. âWe should hopefully have him back in a few days. It shouldnât take long.â Please, fuck, let it not take long. If she has to strangle Edwin, sheâll feel really about about making Niko sad.
âJust be careful,â Niko says. âEdwin told me about the tablet. It sounds scary.â
David guffaws. âItâs like itâs our job to deal with scary.â
Crystal speaks over him. âWeâll be careful. The whole point of the Vault is so it goes somewhere where it canât hurt anybody.â
The elevator stops on the fourth floor and Niko steps off the elevator, turning to smile at Crystal. âSee you when you get back!â
âSee youââ The doors slide closed in Crystalâs face, taking the warmth of Nikoâs presence. She lets out a long breath as the elevator continues its upward climb.
âYou know, sheâs cute,â David says slyly. âIf you wantââ
âNo,â Crystal snaps, keeping her face turned away from him. Sheâs pretty sure Davidâs picked up on her stupid schoolgirl crush on Niko, even if he hasnât said anything about it directly. She knows she hasnât been subtle, gazing moony-eyed at Niko whenever theyâre in the same room. Itâs only surprising that Niko herself doesnât seem to have noticed. Surprising and a relief, because Crystal really would have to open up that portal to Hell and throw herself in if Niko caught on.
âOh, come on.â Davidâs voice dips. âI think sheâd be fun. The sweet ones always surprise you.â
"Sheâs not going to have a threesome with us, David.â
âThatâs okay. I donât mind sitting back and watching.â
Crystal turns to glare at him. âStop being fucking gross about our coworker.â
David must see sheâs serious, because his smile turns apologetic. âSorry, babe,â he says, throwing an arm around her. âYou know Iâm just joking.â
âI know,â Crystal says, annoyed, both with herself and with David. She has a boyfriend, and yet she canât stop thinking about Niko Sasaki with her pretty smile and her smell of strawberries. Jesus Christ, what is wrong with her?
They donât talk again until theyâre walking into Assistant Director Nurseâs seventh floor office and find Edwin and Russell already there. Just one look at Edwin tells Crystal heâs going to be a pain in the ass; his arms are crossed over his chest and heâs tapping his foot irritably. Nurse looks equally unhappy, her eyes narrowing as Crystal and David step through the door.
âYouâre late,â she bites out.
A glance at the clock tells Crystal itâs been an hour and three minutes since Nurse dismissed them. She opens her mouth to apologizeâeven though she really wants to tell Nurse to chill the fuck outâbut she breaks off with a gasp as a wave of dark energy hits her. Her eyes fall on the nondescript brown leather briefcase sitting in the middle of Nurseâs desk and she has to resist the urge to back away.
Even without touching it, Crystal can feel the malevolence emanating from whateverâs in that briefcase. It coats the back of her tongue and makes the hair on her arms prickle. Cold sweat beads on the back of her neck and at her hairline. She doesnât want to get into a car with that thing. She doesnât even want to be in the same country as it. There isnât a single doubt in her mind that whateverâs in that briefcase could open a gate to Hell and end the world.
âCreepy, isnât it?â Agent Russell asks casually. âIt makes my skin crawl.â
âYeah.â Crystal canât look away from the briefcase, the same way she wouldnât be able to look away from a carnivorous unicorn about to charge at her. Every single one of her instincts is telling her that sheâs in the presence of something that wants her dead.
âSo you can see why this is important.â Assistant Director Nurse looks down at the briefcase with trepidation. âThis tablet must get to the Vault as soon as possible. I shudder to think what would happen were it to fall into the wrong hands.â
Chapter 13 and Chapter 14 of Wedding Vows and Other Lies are up! Chapter 13 is a smutty interlude that can be skipped without missing anything and Chapter 14 is a somewhat plottier chapter.
Excerpt from Chapter 14:
When Charles pulls away, he asks, âSo, what now?â
Edwin glances at the clock. âBreakfast is most likely almost over. And weâll need to leave soon to get Crystal and Niko to the airport.â
âI mean with us, love.â Smiling, Charles pushes back Edwinâs hair from his face. âLike, do we date? Do I ask you out?â
âWeâre married, Charles.â
âWell, yeah, but it still feels like I should do this properly, doesnât it? We never got that awkward first date. Never got to sneakily hold your hand in class. Never got to snog you in the equipment closet at St. Hilâs.â
âI cannot imagine we missed out on much there. I assume it smelled rank.â
âOh, absolutely,â Charles says fondly. âNever even got to ask you to be my boyfriend.â
âAgain, we are married. You proposed. Twice. I believe husband outranks boyfriend by several degrees.â
âIâd still like to go on a proper date when we get back to London,â Charles says.
âI will not enter a single equipment closet,â Edwin tells him severely. âAt St. Hilarionâs or otherwise.â
âCome on, mate, itâs sort of fun, trying to figure out if the thing poking you is a cricket bat orââ
âNo.â
