𝘋𝘰 look up!
When you think of National Marine Sanctuaries you don't normally think of the sky. But when you’re in Mallows Bay-Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary it's hard not to look up! Check out this week’s Earth is Blue video to learn all about the avian ambassadors of this sanctuary, including one very famous species. It’s fitting that Mallows Bay lies just outside of our nation’s capital.

The Ghost Fleet of Mallows Bay (c) National Geographic
A century ago, dozens of shipyards across the United States constructed a fleet of wooden steamships to aid the fight against Germany during World War I. Today, ospreys nest on the boats, and bats breed in the hull. More than 100 of these historic vessels survive, serving as a half-submerged home for fish, beavers, waterfowl, and vegetation along a stretch of the Potomac River next to Mallows Bay, Maryland.
The Mallows Bay-Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary holds not only remains of the “ghost fleet” of WWI vessels, but also Civil War-era shipwrecks, and Native American archaeological sites dating back 12,000 years.

Ghost Fleet
In cloud convoy The ghost fleet Rushes to the front Lifting waves in its wake With the thunder of big guns Clad in steely gray The watery war is won today In bountiful barrage of tiny bombs A drifting deluge in subterfuge Pelting and pummeling Into muddied puddles Batteries spent The gray ghosts relent Retreating with Godspeed Over the ocean That set them in motion. litglob © 2019
