⁣ Samsung Galaxy Note 10+⁣ Taken on 16/02/2021.⁣ ⁣ Dotted around Piedmont's easternmost province, Novara, are quiet villages that preserve small medieval settlements – known in these parts as 'ricetti' – of great architectural value: San Nazzaro Sesia, Galliate, Gozzano, Romagnano Sesia and Ghemme.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Ghemme has a very well-preserved 'ricetto', literally meaning 'refuge', that covers an area of 12,000 square metres and used to protect agricultural products, animals and people from the troubled times involving raids by Swiss, Spanish and French armies between the 11th and 15th centuries.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ As you can see in this photo set, the houses are made of rows of brick interspersed with pebbles in a herringbone pattern, and almost all of them have a mezzanine.⁣⁣ ⁣ In addition, along the rectangular 'ricetto' there used to be a moat, which leads many to believe that Ghemme was only accessible by means of a drawbridge. While the access tower to the town no longer exists, visitors are nonetheless fortunate enough to see one of the two cylindrical towers built by the centuries-old wall—and in a very fine condition.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Take a train from Turin or Milan to Novara.
