sighing forever because surely in some better reality, one of the gegege no kitaro animes- the 80s or 90s series- got a good english dub and was aired on american tv while i was growing up, because i know i would have eaten that shit up with a spoon. like it's cute now! i'm watching the most recent series now as an adult because of an odd sequence of events (artwork on a sake label which i recognized later on in passing and looked up because it was good art) that made me curious enough to seek out this anime i had never heard of. and it's enjoyable, and also as an artist (in the loosest terms) i adore the character designs so so much. but i know this show would have had me obsessed as a kid. this kinda cute but also weird and spooky shit was my whole fucking jam. and i lament that i missed out back then

oh god also. ok. also. totally spotted an eyeball-head-man in the audience at the dark tournament in yyh. totally a reference to medama-oyaji. no way in hell it was not. oh my god. which absolutely does not surprise me in the slightest because knowing the context now- that gegege no kitaro has been on tv in one form or another for like fifty years and, from what i hear, brought yokai back into popular culture- yyh has got to owe it's entire existence to gggnk. like in that way of, if x thing didn't happen y thing wouldn't have happened. like lord of the rings and dungeons and dragons. i'm sorry that's the first example i thought of. i'm tired. i know there are better examples.
