frankly ford doesn't want to be dead so he occasionally levitates something that might help and when stan doesn't notice he throws it at the back of his head because he's still mad at him for fucking killing him
so instead of being stuck outside of his home dimension for thirty years he's literally just dead. and the kids discover his corpse instead of the portal </2
