Advice to a junior with a 21 on the act wanting to go to am ivy? Br really harsh i need truth
The truth? Your essays and GPA better be killer. I did some homework for you and found that the range for the middle 50% of incoming students was 32-35 four years ago. I also found that a 21 converts to roughly a 1500 for the 2400 SAT, and a 1100 for the 1600 SAT. (I did this because I’m most comfortable with the 2400 SAT.) Because the scores are approximately normally distributed (can you tell that I just took my stats final) the chances that they admit someone with that low of a score are very slim. However, I’m sure you’re aware of the policy that Columbia (and most Ivy) admissions are holistic, which means there’s no true cutoff. So you have a chance, it’s just a really small one.
If you’re wondering what the chances are that a really good essay could get you in despite your ACT score, you might be in luck. Essays definitely hold more power than ACT scores alone, and are the most controllable. Your GPA is going to sway the decision either way against your favor if it’s poor, or way in your favor if it’s good. For your emotional well-being, I hope it’s good. You could also have glowing recs, or be involved in an incredible number of clubs with outstanding leadership positions. The point is, you have to make sure the rest of your app more than makes up for your ACT score. Because to be honest, it’s low for an ivy. Not low, but low for an ivy.
Then again, you’re a junior. You’ve got time to study hard, take it again, and bump it up into the high twenties before apps are due. Do everything you can to get the highest score you can, because while yes there’s no cutoff, your score kind of serves as a “quality tag,” like, oh this applicant is great for our school, but in case you were wondering, their score backs our claim up. Best of luck, I don’t think there’s a great chance you’ll get in, but people who belong at Columbia really do find their way in. I hope you belong here.
