My process for taking #HospitalGlam photos has always been setting down my phone using a silent, repeating timer and the back lens pointed at me to capture images while I settle into the space, without looking at a screen. The images are moments caught between standing or laying down, sliced out of appointments where my doctors and I discuss the state of my body. In the often most dramatic photos, I am at my most sick. I had no qualms about doing this project, because my level of illness was indisputable. I realize it is not the same for everybody. The way the camera carves away all context is similar to our vignetted experiences out in the world when invisibly disabled. Image informs our treatment, in and out of the hospital, in every sense. I became blonde when beginning #HospitalGlam so images of my invisibly disabled body could become as porous as my follicles. There had to be room in each image to find your own space within the clinical environment, examine the role image plays in our treatment, acknowledge hospitals as mutual workspaces for doctors and patients, allow a bridge between communities, remove fear, and have some space for others to create what they need in the project.
