I'd seen the Gengenbach gate tower several times from the train on the Schwarzwaldbahn going to Hornberg, Triberg or Singen, and every time I'd sigh and say "I should have a look one day". Well this Tuesday I'd been walking around Hornberg with my parents and sister (and, having mentioned it twice in one paragraph, Hornberg is definitely a place I should get round to talking about), and had time for another quick look at a place before running out of sunlight. This was the chance, so we hopped on a local train to Gengenbach.
This is the gate tower that is visible from the railway line. It features the towns coat of arms with the Imperial Eagle and mentions "Reichsstadt": despite its rather small size - even today, it has only around 11,000 inhabitants -, Gengenbach had Free City status within the Holy Roman Empire from 1366, meaning it was self-governing. It lost its relative independence in 1803, when it was attached to the Electorate (Grand Duchy from 1806) of Baden, which is symbolised by the left date and yellow and red coat of arms. On the right, we have Gengenbach's animal emblem, the Gangfisch, a type of salmon, seen again on the statue below.
Gengenbach has a charming town centre with traditional timber-framed buildings and several towers, church or otherwise, jutting up. On the right, the Niggelturm and building in front house a museum on the area's Fastnacht carnival tradition. The surrounding area has rolling, rather easy-looking hills and vineyards I should explore the next time I pop by.
