Sometimes I have to remind myself that it’s OK to use a break, especially on the weekends. I always get upset with myself whenever I’m not productive, but sometimes I need to take a break and that’s fine. Don’t push yourself more than you use to, EVER!
I feel like I have poisoned myself by reading cynical blogs in my formative that make fun of "Bad Science" in sci fi stories, Reddit debates about how "Unrealistic" certain kinds of media are and random people on the internet shaming creators who make the kind of fiction I want to make that now I can't stop second guessing myself before creating anything in fear of not bringing anything new to the table, and that have been stopping me from creating my dream webcomic for 15 YEARS at this point.
Is there a way to cure yourself from that?
Pick your battles.
I like having some realism in the fantasy stories I'm writing, but I have to draw a line somewhere to keep myself from going overboard and getting overwhelmed with the nitty gritty details or it will all just be a horrid mess.
So i limit myself. Maybe 3-5 big points of realism per major worldbuilding thing. Like for the people. Example:
Centaur realism. My centaurs are based on chalicotheres, an ice age megafauna, so their proportions are unique and they don't have a "human half". I explain their extra limbs and doubled ribs as a chimeric twin biology thing, which simply evolved to become normal in their species. The chimeric twin thing allows me to branch out with their spiritual beliefs and I made it more common for them to have congenital defects compared to other people species. A major factor in their evolution towards sapience was continual predation from the orcs.
And from there you can see how this also allows me to connect the orc worldbuilding details and work out some major world history like how the different people species have clashed in the past and had to overcome this to view each other as equals.
I do not have to go making an entire super realistic detailed chart of centaur skeletons and musculature and internal organs. I do not need to build an entire language for them (though the ghost of Tolkein has certainly tried to persuade me) I do not need to go into great detail explaining their entire evolutionary history.
It's enough to set yourself some limits, allow your ideas to connect like a web and grow in an organic way, and give yourself some space for the Rule of Cool and the Rule of Funny.
Rule of Cool means you can ignore some realism in favor of "this is just awesome and fun". Rule of Funny means if it's humorous enough, it wins. Apply them with balance! You have to consider your genre. Rule of Cool basically beats everything else when it comes to something like a shonen anime, but too much of it can make a more grounded story feel ridiculously immature. Rule of Funny obviously takes full priority in a comedy, but it sure won't play well in a hard scifi with a darker edge.
And number one rule is you gotta have fun! I make my fantasy more grounded because I'm having fun with that! I enjoy making all this detailed worldbuilding and figuring out the connections and allowing that to influence the narratives i write. But someone else may not enjoy that and find the task of super detailed worldbuilding to be a horrible boring chore. They don't have to make it detailed! Consistency and coherency do not require great detail. They just require narrative logic.
Lastly, it's important to connect with other people who can encourage you to let loose and have fun. If a community space makes you feel bad and discourages your whimsy, leave that space. You don't have to stay there! You can go find other people. For most of my life I've only had a very small handful of close friends I could rely on to let me info dump my ideas and bounce back more ideas. One friend is sometimes all it takes to give you a comfortable space to be yourself and let your ideas grow.
General advice: Ladies and gentlemen just because someone wants to fuck you does not mean they want to date you!!!!!!! Those are two totally different things!!!!

to the anon that feels lost in their 20s I’m 27 turning 28 and I can say that I’m young enough to remember how I felt in my early 20s since it was only a few years ago but at the same time old enough to realize I’m close to my 30s… anyway what I’m trying to say is that everything will work out! As long as you try to be kind and do your best you will be okay. You will make friends and find people who love you for you… you’ll get a job - the first one you’ll probably hate and realize you wanna do something entirely different. But the older you get you’re gonna wanna hug your younger self cause you were just a baby
Absolutely Nony! Very well said!
