Gelson’s, 4520 Van Nuys Blvd, Los Angeles (Sherman Oaks), CA 91403
I’ve been to half a dozen Gelson’s locations now and they’re all very clean with wide aisles and an impressive looking wine selection. The produce always looks so perfect. The one in Sherman Oaks is special though, because it has a Humphrey Yogart inside (the only Gelson’s with a froyo shop inside).
If I’m looking for new mainstream products, Gelson’s is the best place – better than Bristol Farms and Whole Foods. Gelson’s is as large as Von’s but definitely more premium. The Viktor Benes bakery/Lavazza coffee bar and deli/prepared foods (rotisserie chicken, made to order sandwiches ($8.99), Wolfgang Puck pizzas) are at the front of the store. They even have a wood fired oven for the pizzas.
In the produce section, they have lots of organic options. The flowers looked nice. They also have a staffed meat/seafood counter, fresh juices, bulk foods, etc. Pretty nice. The ice cream selection is impressive (e.g., Jeni’s, Pressed Juicery Frozen, McConnell’s, Oatly, Frill and probably brands that you’ve never tried or seen elsewhere) and they’re one of the few stores to carry La Fermiere yogurt, Ari’s and Elleno’s. It’s a little pricier than other markets but also nicer. The prepared foods are cheaper than Whole Foods and Erewhon.
Free wi-fi. Also, they have a loyalty/rewards program. There’s plenty of parking. Don’t forget to get a froyo on your way out.

Gelson’s is as large as Von’s, Ralphs and Pavilions, but definitely more premium. It’s a little pricier than other markets but also nicer. The prepared foods/deli area is large and features a salad/hot food bar (all prepackaged now because of COVID), fresh juices, cut up fresh fruit, Wolfgang Puck pizzas (available hot and by the slice), salads, carving station and made to order sandwiches. They also have an in-store Viktor Benes bakery that serves coffee. Aisles are wide and the store always looks well-maintained.
In the produce section, they have lots of organic options. The flowers looked nice. They also have a large wine/cheese department, staffed meat/seafood counter, fresh juices, bulk foods, etc.
The ice cream selection is impressive and they’re one of the few stores to carry La Fermiere yogurt and Ari’s. It’s the first store that I’ve seen several products, including Fronen, plant-based ice cream. I wouldn’t choose it as a place to do my primary grocery shopping but I do get things there that I might not find elsewhere. For example, I could not find vegan roast at Erewhon Palisades and Gelson’s had two kinds of vegan roast, Tofurky and Gardein.
My picks:
Tofurky plant-based roast ($13.99): not as good as Gardein’s and the gravy is sold separately (dry, less flavor)
Ari’s lemon kefir yogurt ($4.99): Best yogurt, super thick, sold at farmer’s markets and a few high end grocery stores
La Fermiere yogurt
Parking is easy. They also have a rewards program.

Normally, a show like this would be in the walls of some hallowed indie music venue a la Neil Hamburger and Special Guests at The Satellite. However, next week, this wondrous line-up will brings some delightful mischief to the Gelson’s in Silver Lake.
Also, the show is free to attend. Get more details here.

Haggen Bankruptcy: Ongoing Sale Process---Stores Smart & Final and Gelson's to buy in Ventura County
Haggen today announced that it has filed motions with and is seeking the approval of the bankruptcy court to establish procedures for ongoing sales. The motions present global bidding procedures, stalking horse package bid procedures and a schedule of stores being sold.
Haggen is seeking a court hearing on October 19, 2015 to hear the Company’s proposed global bid procedures. Parties interested in participating in the sale of stores need to submit an indication of interest by no later than October 26. The procedures provide for a deadline for submission of bids to purchase some or all of the assets on 5:00 p.m. ET on November 2, with an auction scheduled on November 9. The hearing to consider the results of the auction will be held on November 24. In the event no auction is conducted for a stalking horse package or if one of the stalking horse bidders is the successful bidder for its package after the auction and the contracts identified in the original bid have not changed, a sale hearing for those stores will be held on November 13 instead. All dates are tentative and subject to bankruptcy court approval.
Haggen previously requested approval to begin going out of business sales in the identified non-core locations and will exit operations during the last weeks of November. The sale process has been designed to be fair and transparent in order to derive the highest bid for the stores and to maximize value for the estate and creditors in an orderly process. The procedures will allow the sale auction(s) to be conducted in a controlled, fair and open fashion that will encourage participation of financially capable buyers.
Haggen also filed motions to approve two separate asset purchase agreements for stalking horse bidder packages. Gelson’s Markets signed an asset purchase agreement for 8 stores in California and Smart & Final LLC signed an agreement for 28 stores in California and Nevada. Both agreements are subject to bankruptcy court approval.
Sagent Advisors, LLC has been retained to coordinate the sale process for Haggen. Parties interested in learning more about the process can contact Sagent at (212) 904-9400.
