“I am Gem’s eldest brother.”

“And how old were you when Gem arrived?” 

“I was twenty-six.” 

“That must’ve been strange.” 

“Not really. At that point, I had welcomed five other new brothers. Gem was easy to like, he was quiet and polite. And…when he wasn’t, well, I understood that he was scared. It was nice being older, because I had a good perspective on things.” 

Gem couldn’t refute any of that. Dian was a good older brother. He took the brunt of their parents’ expectations and wore it well. He had never held what happened against him. Really, he had always been more upset at the other brothers, for all the anger. 

He had just come home from prison and no one had even missed a beat. Dian had gone missing and it was like the whole world had imploded. 

“And what was your relationship with Gem like?”

GEM: Gem had packed Sebastian in the car with little information and headed to Elliot’s, who had just happened to gotten off work when Gem had called him, leaving the Hauntley. He needed a place where he wasn’t gonna be overheard. He needed a drink. And he needed his brothers.

His gloves squeaked faintly as they clutched at the steering wheel. Gem still felt like he was careening out of control, which made driving slightly unsettling. But, he wasn’t careening out of control. Everything had ended up fine. So, why did he feel jittery? Like he’d just dodged a huge fucking bullet? 

They made it into the house and Gem opened the bottle of whiskey he’d grabbed from the Morey’s collection. They didn’t keep much alcohol in the house. Something like whiskey would usually be mixed with something else and only brought out at parties. 

Gem poured himself two fingers. He left the bottle on the counter, not offering any to his brothers, and then collapsed onto the couch, glugging his drink down and then rubbing a hand over his face.
