"Cold?" Ramora murmurs with a soft, amused smile as Alphinaud curls into her back.
"Bitter, freezing, bloody gelid." Alphinaud returns, shaking so hard from cold that Ramora could feel the tremble of his body through their barrier of clothes.
She could hear the sharp clack of his teeth chattering.
Gelid? Ramora rolls her eyes with a fond smile. Alphinaud and his fancy words.
"C'mere, Alphi."
Ramora rolls over to face him, paying no mind to the squawk of a sound Alphinaud makes as she pulls him forward into her arms.
"Calm down," She says on a husky laugh, her lips brushing his cheek and ear in fleeting kiss before she tugs him forward. "Just sharing body heat."
Alphinaud grunts, muffled with his face buried in her chest. Twelve, his skin was freezing. She could feel the chilly tip of his upturned nose through the fabric of her shirt.
She cups her hands over his ears, rubbing warmth back in them with her fingertips.
"You're so warm," Alphinaud groans, wiggling as close as he could possibly get.
Ramora smiles into the softness of his wild hair through a strange, heavy sense of déjà vu. Had something like this happened before? "Convenient when it is cold, but not so much in the warmer climes."
Ramora shifts him closer still, tugging her blanket over the both of them.
Warming him with the heat of her body and the brisk stroke of her hand down his back. Alphinaud's shivering slowly lessening until he all but stops.
Ramora's eyes droop drowsily. Sleep catching hold again.
"I miss you," Alphinaud says suddenly, breaking the quiet that had fallen between them.
Ramora blinks, a confused huff of a laugh spilling through her lips. What an odd thing to say. "I'm right here?"
Alphinaud leans back, looking her in the face with a grave expression. "You're not."
"Alphi...?" What was he on about? He was making her nervous.
Alphinaud touches a hand to her cheek, a haunted look in his blue eyes. A bleakness that she had hoped to never see the likes of again.
"Come back, Ramora." Alphinaud whispers, cupping her face in his hands.
Her heart thunders to catch up with the sudden racing of her thoughts. "Alphi, what...?"
Alphinaud turns his head to stare out into the dark surrounding them, eyes widening.
He looks back at her, wide eyed, with an urgency to his voice as he whispers intensely, "Wake up!"
WAKE UP!
Ramora jerks awake with a choked gasp, hunching in on herself at the cold biting at her skin. She shivers hard, teeth chattering. "A-al-ph-i-i-i?"
.
Her fire had gone out. The cold setting into her bones.
She is alone.
