My rant about how NOT OKAY Paul Stamets is (Season 2 ep.1 edition)
Okay. I'm aware that I'm a Queen blog and I´m sorry to all my Queen stans, but I just watched STD S2E1 and I need to rant about our favourite mushroom lover Paul Stamets and my analyses of how he´s dealing with his emotions.
SPOILER ALERT FOR SEASON 2 EPISODE 1, DON'T READ THE REST IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED THAT.
Disclaimer: I’m only theorizing and I would actually love to read your thoughts too.
First off: I think we can all agree that he's not doing very well. I found it very surprising that he's going to teach at the Vulcan science academy. I feel like this is like the ultimate metaphor of his unwillingness to deal with everything that happened. I mean, he's leaving the discovery, all his friends andhis life's work to go teach in a place where it's literally encouraged to not work with emotions. He's going to surround himself with people who will never demand of him to face his grief and do something with it. If that's not running away from your own grief I don't know what is.
Second: (and this broke my heart so you better agree with me ;)). During the second half it was evident to me that he was trying to put on a brave face for Tilly because he feels bad for her. Maybe he also feels guilty for leaving her. He´s clearly feigning enthusiasm and happiness to keep her happy and for now Tilly seems to be falling for it. She looked so happy when he participated in catching the asteroid and cracked a joke. I feel like he might try to keep this up until they may or may not reach Vulcan.
So in conclusion: I'm not okay, Stamets is certainly not okay and WHY DOES THIS SHIP NOT HAVE A PSYCHOLOGIST ON BORD? That's literally my conclusion for now, but I might feel the need to rant after we see how this develops in future episodes.
