Naast mijn oude flat Echtenstein staat de basisschool de Bijlmerhorst. Een robuust gebouw met veel ramen. Eigenlijk een mooie weergave van de school, duidelijk en helder onderwijs. In 2017 i started playing field hockey. I remember we were walking past this small building next to the hockey field, to get water. It was maybe 6m by 8m big. Inside there were a bunch of sweaty guys rolling around on puzzle mats. Walking to the nearest water tap, and seeing this, my 17 year old mind was thinking "...Looks a bit inappropriate to have this kind of debaucherous behaviour on school grounds. Although, this is springs afterall." In springs we have a strip club right around the corner from multiple pre-schools, and churches.

Years later i am now part of that group of people rolling around the ground with sweaty partners. Turns out this odd behaviour is known as Brazillian Jiu Jitsu. And that small building next to the school's hockey fields is now a sports shop for the students who forgot their scrumcap or athletic tape at home.

The club bought a lot of land in one of the town's many industrial areas. This area is known as New Era.

With this move, our club's name changed from Rio Grappling Club - Springs; to Rio Grappling Club - New Era.

In the beginning it was just another run down factory building, but Michael (our Head coach) had a vision, and determination. The premises went from an industrial ruin, to a place that could one day be a hub for combat athletes.

By the time i had started rolling, there were just a few mats in the middle of the floor, potted plants on a countertop that is held up by paint buckets, and a few couches and plastic chairs against the wall around the mats.

It's an ongoing community effort, but at least we now have proper table legs instead of paint buckets. We have more padded chairs for visitors to sit on, and even our bathrooms recently had some renovation work done. So now it doesn't feel like you're going to do your business in the prison lavatory anymore.

Rio Grappling Club New Era now also boasts with the fact that we not only have BJJ classes, but we also have weekly classes dedicated to Karate, and Muay Thai. Not to mention we have a fully functional gym now, with the best equipment some of our members could donate (or buy for the gym).

We did this all ourselves.

We never had the capital or support to move into a nice building in a gated community or fancy lifestyle complex. We had Michael - A lawyer in the making, with an unshakable passion for improving himself through jiu jitu. I don't even want to know how much of his own money he has injected into the improvement of this club. He is the reason we stay afloat. We didn't have a cleaning crew, we had Danie and Jancke - Helping keep order. I have seen Danie bringing brand new equipment that i presume he bought with his own money on a teacher's salary. We had Jancke - She brings trashbags, she brings water when our municipal account is in arrears, she helps keep the place decent.
