Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Laxman
R.K.Laxman, his common man and the 'You said it' corner in Times of India are practically a part of the consciousness of most Indians my age and above. I recently stumbled onto a section on RK Laxman cartoons in Pinterest and tripped over countless cartoons for a couple of hours. Finally, I selected about 15-20 of the ones that I loved the most and made a video collage out of it. Please watch it while you read the below trivia about this not-so-trivial Indian personality.
1. His elder brother was Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Narayanswami, popularly known as R.K.Narayan, another Padma Vibhushan and creator of Swami and friends. They belonged to a family of 8 Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer siblings. Imagine being one of the other 6 R.Ks in a family containing two Padma awardees!
2. After high school, he applied to Sir J.J.Institute of Applied Arts for admission. He was refused, saying he was not talented enough for the institute. Hmm!
3. His first full-time job was as a political cartoonist with The Free Press Journal in Mumbai, where his colleague was one Mr. Bal Thackeray.
4. In 1951, he joined TOI, worked there for 50 plus years and created the common man, who is said to have 'witnessed the making of Indian democracy.'
5. He created Gattu, the popular mascot of Asian Paints, and also sketched for TV series Malgudi days and Waghle ki duniya.
6. He died on Republic day, 2015, at the age of 93. He was given a state funeral by the Maharashtra government.
7. There is a common man statue in Symbiosis Institite, Pune, as a tribute to him.
8. He is a Ramon Magsasay award winner.
