Besalú, vila jueva
🇪🇸 Besalú, situada al sureste de la Garrotxa, fue un importante enclave de la comunidad judía en la Edad Media. Esta comunidad, que habitó en la villa desde el siglo IX hasta el siglo XV, floreció especialmente en los siglos XII, XIII y XIV, cuando la comunidad se independizó de la de Girona. La judería se situaba cerca del río Fluvià, con la sinagoga en la Plaza de los Judíos, construida en 1264 tras un privilegio otorgado por el rey Jaime I. A lo largo de la ruta, se pueden ver lugares como el micvé, uno de los pocos baños de purificación del siglo XII que se conservan en Europa, y diversas mezuzás, que dan testimonio de la presencia judía. La comunidad se enfrentó a crecientes tensiones a finales del siglo XIV, lo que resultó en conversiones y expulsiones, un preludio a la expulsión definitiva en 1492 bajo los Reyes Católicos.

🇺🇸 Besalú, located in the southeast of Garrotxa, was a key Jewish enclave during the Middle Ages. This community, which lived in the town from the 9th to the 15th century, flourished particularly in the 12th, 13th, and 14th centuries, when it became independent from Girona’s Jewish community. The Jewish quarter was situated near the Fluvià River, with the synagogue in the Plaza de los Judíos, built in 1264 after a privilege granted by King James I. Along the route, visitors can see landmarks like the mikveh, one of the few 12th-century purification baths preserved in Europe, and various mezuzahs, testifying to the Jewish presence. Growing tensions in the late 14th century led to conversions and expulsions, foreshadowing the 1492 expulsion by the Catholic Monarchs.
