A few days ago, we posted about an old Honda Civic we were repairing. Well, we took the car for a test ride after the repair work was done, and we were in for an awfully bumpy ride! Actually, this bumpiness is not at all uncommon after repair work. Shock absorbers are extended fully when the car is placed on a lift or on jack stands. This makes them malfunction for a while after the car is taken down. If the shock absorbers were originally in okay condition, they will start functioning fine after 20-30 km, especially if you go over some speed bumps. This is because the shock absorber fluid gets displaced during repairs and takes time to come back to its proper place. If the shock absorbers were in a bad state to begin with, the full extension may push them over the edge and cause them to fail entirely. In such cases, it’s time to change your shock absorber. It’s easy to think that the sudden bumpiness is the Technician’s fault, since the car was not bouncy before servicing. But it is in fact a normal side effect of servicing. If the bumpiness does not stop even after 30 km of driving, bring your car back to your technician and have the shock absorbers replaced. It means they were due for replacement anyway. In the case of this old Honda Civic, the shock absorbers were on their way out. The customer understood the problem and approved the replacement of shock absorbers.
