Did gamelan have a thing come up in the western world in the 80s??? Listening to "paradise view" by haruomi hosono and there are so many obviously gamelan-influenced tracks. same with wendy carlos "beauty in the beast"; 80s, gamelan. The residents also got on it but later. But when I first lokoed looked into gamelan, i found an album from the 80s also! I did hear smth about that coming up in prog scenes where people were like "look at this cool weird music i found from indonesia." I wanna know the tea here.
Anyways if you haven't listened to music like this plx plx listen to haromi hosono "paradise view" or "good sport" they're really good. Also you can listen to wendy carlos "beauty in the beast" but i didn't enjoy it as much as haruomi hosono music. And mayb also listen to the residents but only if you wanna hurt. OH and also listen to "swing slow" by haruomi hosono and miharu koshi its really good. "swing slow" started me on the track of being able to appreciate simple songs as something more complex. Then you can also maybe start with miharu koshi solo work, then go to swing slow, and then work your way up to like haruomi hosono in the 80s-90s non-american-sounding-music stuff, and then idk someone really phreaky after that. these are all so great musicians. but I also think that at least "paradise view" would be acccessible to the types who would see my blog as it is a little video-gamey. actually wouldn't you know it, I finished the album and it played for me that one song from chrono trigger. the one that sounds like the album i just finished.

Rani Jambak - Vibra Genetika - from Indonesia, history & tradition meet electronics (Yes No Wave Music)
VIBRA GENETIKA is a holistic journey that delves into the interconnected dimensions of life. Since 2013, Rani Jambak has embarked on a path to explore the meaning of her cultural identity as a Minangkabau descendant born and raised in Medan. Through this process, she began piecing together fragments of family history, the complexities of her cultural heritage, and the diversity of her surroundings. This journey has not only allowed Rani to understand her connection to tradition and her ancestral land but also to explore the concept of Rantau (migration) as a vital part of the enduring Minangkabau narrative. As her journey continues, the transformation of a woman's life into that of a wife and mother has led Rani to discover new dimensions in understanding herself—a transformation of femininity that transcends physical boundaries, aiming toward harmony between body and soul. Each step along this journey forms a crucial element in shaping her worldview, fostering a profound awareness of the interconnectedness between ancestors, nature, and time. This awareness gives rise to reverence for the past, gratitude for the present, and a vision to perceive "future ancestors" as part of an eternal chain of energy. Rani Jambak, a distinguished composer, producer, field recordist, instrument designer, and vocalist of Minangkabau descent from Medan, actively engages in the exploration of electronic music and soundscapes derived from diverse locations across Indonesia. Her body of work frequently addresses themes related to nature, socio-cultural dynamics, and the interrelationship between humans and their ancestral heritage. In recognition of her innovative contributions to sound, music, and technology, Jambak was honored with The Oram Awards in 2022. Produced, vocal, field recorded, and mixed by Rani Jambak Palayaran (Rabab Batok Piaman) by Monen on Orang Piaman Field Recorded on As I Stand In Fire by Toton Januar
