The shredded remains of a colorful paper coaster slowly lifted off the surface of the bar and began to fall into a neat pile. After her disastrous morning, Mâgann hardly cared if anyone noticed that the pieces were arranging themselves. If anyone had anything pointed to say, sheâd just stand up and walk away. Stupid. She should have just done that to begin with. It was nearly impossible to reason with an emboldened, pigheaded civilian backed by the very latest âfacts.â
We Built This City blasted from the stereo system and almost drowned out the sound of sirens outside the bar. It wasnât Mâgannâs usual scene. She hadnât been in a dive bar in well over a year and she hadnât had an alcoholic beverage since before the holidays. Mâgann closed her eyes and took a long drink from the glass of Coca-Cola. Now was not the time to start drinking alone, no matter how much she felt she could use a real drink.
Mâgann stretched her back just a little bit before sinking back down. Elbows on the bar, she pressed her hands to her forehead. Every bit of her felt tired. Under different circumstances this bar might have been a good place to human watch, but not tonight. Tonight, Mâgann was too caught up in her own thoughts to even notice the woman stepping up until she was less than a foot away in the cramped bar. Mâgann tilted her head to the side and looked curiously at the strange woman, suddenly wide awake. The stranger was about as human as Mâgann herself. The stranger was green.
