When Dazai found out he had a soulmate, he had never expected to meet him like this.

Dazai Osamu had no concept of love. He knew the theory behind it, all the little psychological concepts. For him, it was just another tool like respect, adoration and desire. Something he knew he wasn’t capable of. So when he found foreign words looped around his wrist the morning after he turned seventeen, he was at a loss. For once in his life, Dazai didn’t quite know what to do. Soulmates weren’t that common, a true connection with another human was praised as a gift.  It was called love in its purest form.  Of course, Dazai wrapped his bandages around those words and didn’t tell a soul.

It took him a few months to get back to those foreign words, long enough that no one would look at his sudden interest in foreign languages and connect them back to his birthday. They were Russian. “Crime and Punishment”.  It didn’t make any sense back then- he had never had any connection to Russia, and the country didn’t sound pleasant enough to visit. Still, Dazai felt some strange excitement crawling up his back like an unusual type of bug. The words had to mean <i>something</i>; they were the essence of his so-called soulmate. He told himself, he didn’t care about meeting them- it was better for everyone if his façade remained intact forever. Covering the words became a part of his routine, for most days even he forgot about them.

So where does... this come from?

If you have some time to spare or are simply curious, here is a post where I ramble on about the beauty of this hypothetical match.

Basically: a post about a rarepair that is almost rarer than happiness in the BSD fandom.

- POTENTIAL

I think BSD fans only got a tiny taste of this hypothetical duo in the BEAST movie.

Was that enough to make me want more? Yes.

Was that microscopic scene, (which personally reminded me so much of a husband going to pick up the signed divorce papers,) the only reason I started fantasising about them? No.

BUT...

A small detail that no one seems to remember is that, IN CANON, Oda and Fyodor had had some contact in the past: Oda, still a young boy and freelance assassin, had received a job offer from V.

Oda declined the offer. He didn't want to work for those people. And the reason is really interesting: Sakunosuke thought that those who kill for justice... never stop.

And I find that interesting... Because it shows us the first substantial difference between Fyodor and Sakunosuke.

(Too bad. Fyodor would have given us a clean-shaven Oda. In a suit.)

ANYWAY.

Both in the canon and in the small scene added to BEAST, we know that Fyodor appreciates and admires Flawless' potential.

(I would be more impressed by Oda's body's resistance to poison. But everyone focuses on what they want. Idk. Maybe curry is good for your health. Eat spicy spicy curry.).

A small detail: Sakunosuke was probably one of the very few people who knew Fyodor's “secret”.

The nature of his ability.

So.

Let's imagine a scenario in which Fyodor - the man of logical plans and manipulation - decides he wants Sakunosuke on his side, giving him the role NOT of assassin, but of bodyguard...

Why would they work as a pair?

Although Sakunosuke does not share Fyodor's philosophy, he is obedient as long as it's convinient him.

Fyodor does not trust anyone, but he knows how to keep people on his side. People who obey him are useful to him, especially if they do not ask questions.

PERSONALITY

Over time, I began to notice some similarities in their... attitudes.

They are both reserved. Quiet people. Cynical people. People who do not easily trust others.

While Fyodor knows how to feign affection, smiles, and good looks...

Sakunosuke is simply himself: a little rough around the edges, never half-smiling, and few words.

Both love to read.

But above all... Both know how to empathise with people.

While Sakunosuke does so without any real purpose, Fyodor... He does it to manipulate and have a person in his grasp.

Both hate being betrayed. And both believe in revenge.

Unlike Sigma, Sakunosuke would not betray Fyodor.

But Fyodor would know that Sakunosuke was planning to leave his side one day.

But where does the climax come in?

Sakunosuke could represent both a flaw and a confirmation of Fyodor's theory about people.

This is what could prompt Fyodor to take an interest in Sakunosuke.

And Sakunosuke... Over time, he would try to analyse Fyodor. Try to understand him.

Even though Sakunosuke knows he cannot offer him anything in terms of affection.

Sakunosuke would notice how miserable Fyodor really is.

And Fyodor would know he was being noticed in that way, even if Sakunosuke didn't speak up.

Sakunosuke would admire Fyodor's mind.

Fyodor would start checking the books Sakunosuke reads, to understand him better and better.

Fyodor would ask Oda subtle questions if he noticed any “strange” behaviour.

And Sakunosuke would start to seriously worry about Fyodor. Not like Ivan - because of his lobotomy - not like Nikolai (after he thinks he has lost the only person who can understand him), not like Sigma who just wants to know WHAT THE HELL THESE PEOPLE WANT.

Sakunosuke would be Sakunosuke.

And he would end up becoming seriously attached. Even though he shouldn't. And he would never dream of getting rid of Fyodor.

Even though he thinks Fyodor might do that to him.

IN CONCLUSION: AN ALMOST.

Paradoxically... Sakunosuke would find himself with someone to protect, someone as alone in the world as he is.

And Fyodor... would NOT have his equal, but someone by his side who perhaps understands him.

Modern!AU, College!AU

"Your thoughts will give me a headache one day," Fyodor sighed. "They’re almost as nagging as Nikolai."

He always said things like that. As if he could read Oda's mind with the same ease one would read a road sign. But... speaking of annoyances.

"Mh," Sakunosuke hummed distractedly. He crumpled the receipt and stuffed it into his jacket pocket. "I didn't realize my thoughts were so intimate to you."

A small hum. Fyodor tilted his head to study him. "...You know, I think thanks to you, everyone in that coffee shop, your colleagues included, might strongly disagree."
