His chest heaved with every hacking cough that tore from his throat, each one spilling a new puddle of blood down into his awaiting gloved hand. He didn’t feel good. Less so now that Gideon had knocked the wind from him with a kick to the gut that’d surely leave a mark come tomorrow morning.. if he even made it to tomorrow.

Hunched over on the ground, Leon waited until his breathing evened out to finally speak, voice hoarse from pain. “Y’know, for a doctor? You severely lack a bedside manner. They not teach that in med school anymore?” Even when dying, he refused to lose his whimsy. He’d take it to the grave— the only coping mechanism that’d gotten him through years of torment.

“ Come on, I’m not exactly normal anymore, sweetheart; I can handle a pretty mutier like you.”

Which, look, was funnier than anything else he could’ve opened with and he stood by it. A grin pulled at his jaw, easy and unhurried, because the world had ended, walkers were rotting in the streets outside, and somehow this was still the most entertaining thing that had happened to him all week, which said something about the state of things. ( Strangers were usually tedious, panicked eyes and desperate energy and motivations he could clock from twenty paces, but every now and then someone came along in the middle of the apocalypse and genuinely surprised him and he found he appreciated that more than he’d ever admit out loud. ) He’d been drifting through the ruins long enough to know good value when he saw it and this one, five minutes in, was already earning his keep. Thumb hooked in his jacket pocket, tilting his head, utterly unbothered by the distant sound of something dead dragging itself along the road outside.
