3. CALVIN HARRIS, FUNK WAV BOUNCES VOL. 1 (Columbia) Calvin Harris’s latest album is a concisely curated collection of just 10 party-ready tracks that leaves no room for duds. Right from Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1's opening song, "Slide," featuring Frank Ocean and Migos, Harris's influences are clear: eighties Nile Rodgers-style funky urban-pop with just enough modern flavor courtesy of a unique mix of  collaborators (Katy Perry, Pharrell and Big Sean on "Feels," for example). Harris's impressive roster of music industry heavyweights (Snoop Dogg, Ariana Grande) is complemented by an equally impressive array of newcomers, namely Khalid on the thumping "Rollin'" and Kehlani on the wistful "Faking It." Hopefully the Vol. 1 in the title suggests a Vol. 2. —Tufayel Ahmed
I dislike the use of the word “curated” because it sounds like Calvin only selected & organized the work of others instead of creating the concepts, themes, & underlying music that unifies the album. But, hey, #3.
I’m listening to Nuh Ready on repeat while typing this and, ya’know what? It’s FUNKY w/ wavy/groovy Motown elements (the brass!) & bounces along on its “skippy beat”. I don’t understand why Calvin doesn’t think this is the first single for FWB Volume 2. The 2nd installment would naturally be different from the general vibe of the 1st as he progresses toward a re-definition of Funk for the 21st Century. The track is just not as radically different as he said it was. And the snippet of the track that might be new he tossed at us last night is following the same path. While the mood for FWBv1 was chill & laid-back, his new music is hotter & infused w/ disco. I mean, the Dude has got to produce dance party music for Vegas, right? And summer is coming. He always competes for Song of the Summer, doesn’t he? I dunno. I think he’s messing w/ our minds & Volume 2 will be announced in May just like last year. I could be wrong, of course. I often am. But I’m never wrong about da’Funk when I hear it.
