shes back
from where?
capitalism as class warfare and period of transition from medievalism* to meaningful meritocracy (with asides on/to marxism and its ideals)
*in modern day systems
I’ve seen people talking about an Andy Weir quote from 2017 where he said he doesn’t like social commentary in Star Trek, just wants to see good guys and bad guys shooting at each other, and also that he avoids talking about politics in his own writing.
That seems really weird considering the themes of his books, but that aside, and regardless of whether he still considers himself “apolitical,” I have a hard time thinking of any popular sci-fi that is just good guys and bad guys shooting at each other without any social commentary, aside from maybe the most child-audience-focused seasons of Power Rangers or something.
2001: A Space Odyssey constantly juxtaposes the wonder of space travel with how that same technology also facilitates nuclear warfare.
Star Wars pauses the action to talk about why the Empire thinks that the Death Star is politically necessary.
Buck Rogers is about US Americans, Canadians, and indigenous people fighting off an invasion of North America by a “Red” Mongol Empire. Flash Gordon is about uniting various ethnic groups to overthrow a monarchy. John Carter of Mars is about how religion is used to manipulate people. Stargate SG-1 literally had an episode in its first season called “Politics.”
Honestly, the one show I’ve seen with THE MOST spaceships shooting at each other is also the show with the most blunt social commentary of them all.

Florence Gaub (1977) is a Franco-German researcher, security expert and futurist who focuses on foresight based policy formation as director of the research division at the NATO Defense College
The Future: A User’s Guide Expected on April 2, 2026
A guide on using creativity and knowledge to imagine the best, prepare for the worst and live with surprise.
Widespread pessimism and fear of the future are everywhere. With times to come often seeming threatening and uncertain, this book offers new perspectives and fresh ways of thinking.
Futurologist Florence Gaub shows that everyone can influence what lies ahead in their personal or professional life, or in society.
Her ideas are for those who refuse to be paralysed by fear, instead seeing the future as a space full of possibilities.
Gaub explores how humanity's visions of tomorrow have changed throughout history; she explains what the future is, how it works, what disruptions may arise and how to fix them. She draws on insights from neuroscience, psychology and philosophy to show how humans conceive and construct the future, as individuals and as a society.
